This graph shows how many times the word ______ has been mentioned throughout the history of the program.
All right guys welcome to the this time with audio. We've got a fantastic show for you today
Which starts with having sound it looks like our mixer was unplugged, so hopefully that is all
You
At any rate guys we have a show for you today our guest is a total biscuit a
Total biscuit, that's great. He stoked. He'll be joining us in about minutes
If you haven't heard of total biscuit, then you'll meet him here. You just google him. He's kind of a
Yeah
Valve is showing off
I guess they they had to do something because the general internet sentiment about their up
Controller was was not super positive
So they've actually got a demo check that out a little bit later and of steam users this is
Finally moving forward in terms of minimum specification requirements 50% of steam users
I mean more discussion on that of course when that actually happens in the show the GPU wars rage on just in general
We have news on each of each side attacking me and then t-mobile data roaming in a hundred countries
I think yeah 95% of where people are gonna be traveling. I mean that is such a game changer guys not that's not
Like it's not quite. I mean it
You know that is so without let's get this going
As I I have difficulty today
At this
I
Just want to take a moment to thank our sponsors Squarespace for sponsoring the show today
They have been phenomenally generous with the land show over the last few months actually guys
So if you want to take advantage of a special deal, unfortunately
We don't as last month with 20% off of
of your first sort of your first paid
Membership. I'm sorry. I'm a little bit
The lower third that has the offer code on it. Anyway, last month was 20%
Way to create a professional-looking website that works not only on desktop but also on tablet phones and all kinds of cool
key solutions so they handle the hosting for you and they even dynamic and add additional
capabilities which we tested with our site when we had the entire lives a few weeks ago you guys
You
And I got a lot of gaming topics this week
You're gonna kick off with that, all right
As launches
Oh
Okay, so it's not the most
It's not the worst marketing ECS is ever done. I mean, do you remember their black?
I was just like so basically they're saying once you go black you never go back. Oh my god. Oh, no, really. I mean
Like that. Oh, no, I hear you
site that nobody proof read obviously
Obviously nobody apparently we've got Oh for crying out loud. What stream echo? Okay, it should be watching it
Well, I wasn't you're watching
No, no
All right, we should be all good so the so back to the back to the gang drone, okay
well for me the problem with this has has as much to do with that and
That they're doing it wrong. I mean they're calling it leet
spelling
L
337 yeah, that drew me kind of crazy, too
I mean, I mean, okay, so they're taking leet speak and they're applying grammatical correctness to it. It's like well, this is the name
And so it should be capitalized
Yeah, I know
Technically a capital one, right?
No, I mean thinking about it, oh my god, so I okay
Scheme for the board. You know what? Honestly, it's pretty unexceptional looking. It's not like we've never seen an
Orangey cup. I mean, it's not even really gold
We need to be perfectly honest when you compare this to the two spots look gold in the capsule
But the big he's is this what is this plate right here? I know
Like what is this do is it taller than
No height Ram
It looks like it's about the same height as your memory like they're probably marketing
It is like a heat shield or something
Well, cuz I was wondering if it might interfere because I thought it might be I can't really tell if it in
Blues, that would be hilarious
I mean, it looks like it looks like more of like an airflow shield to me and this looks like an extra
Looking at a board
Not a lot of there's not a lot of components on it, you know, where's the beefy VRM?
You know, where's the right angles looks like this is really marketed to
well, you know 12 year olds asking their parents for a new game and
You know, oh it's called the gank drone. So gold and stuff. So it must be
Not to talk smell
Anyone but the cold hard truth of it is guys. I can't think of a compelling reason to buy
I
Call me
Linus why boxing of this
Other thing often don't know what to say because I can't public
You
ECS is not one of those they have a
view in certain price segments and
Product band. So for example, they have their their low-end products do incredibly well in some developing market America. This is true
but a gaming motherboard I
Covered
You have like a soundboard that I can just
their booth at
Computex and when going through it, I knew no
About the business sector motherboards that they have so I didn't bother to cover them, but that's interesting part. Yes
They're in oh, yeah, I covered the gaming section motherboards
Of the booth builds, I mean
Asked for very particular things
On moving an ordinate volume of boards in order to put the R&D resources required into into delivering those things
in order to eat that and if you're moving a few hundred of something or a few thousand of something even you
afford to put the work someone like a Sustas with G board
knowing that they're gonna sell boatloads of them and even if they don't they're gonna sell boatloads of
High margin motherboards that they can
Funnel that funding into or that they have a halo level product that makes them look good in the market. So
So, there you go the
Gang drone or whatever. I mean speaking of the soos that doesn't mean getting a pass on the whole golden mother
Because I mean at least a soos has a to come out and make core
You
Look at you're like corsair. Why do you have that gold memory? They're like, well customers want, you know
Ching, you know color schemes for and there's you know, some gold
Wonder who made those ones
Yes, that's true. But yeah, I'm still but yeah, like you said it doesn't give them a pass either. No, not at all
You
Kind of did but we can jump down a little bit just to think that topic might be a little bit too long
It's just like Lee behind schedule. So if we want to jump down to Chrome OS is takeover of Windows. Ah, yes
All right guys, so
So you go ahead
As far as I could get out of it
It's like it's kind of a little bit vague to be completely honest hosted by good bites on the forum original article from the verge
Just throwing that out there, but and like good bites a little bit about it
Seems slightly sensational. Yeah
It's if you jump over to the verge verges article, it doesn't really take those it's an application and
Application it then basically does while you're running that
Take over of Windows, but we take over windows. So instead of just being a browser you jump into like the Google
Suite ecosystem and then it for the start menu while you're in there and then that start menu becomes for Google Apps
And you're from the Play Store and given that Windows 8 didn't have much of a start menu to speak of
I guess if Google wants to menu in there, that's great. I I think for me, I just don't see this happening
connectivity yes, but I would see
much better established
Taking over as a ready to run OS that relies on internet connectivity
And this isn't a lightweight OS because it has to sit on top of it
It's I mean, it's Chrome and you're gonna if we want to talk lightweight
I mean back when Chrome launched their whole thing lightweight browser
If Chrome is what is
Worst thing about my system. It's the only reason I need more around these
They're hurting on you last week saying that you had to meet been but the chrome
Thing was actually the one that was on the desktop not his laptop. So his left
Open and was stable. We're not saying that was the problem. It was the on the desktop that had like more tabs open
It's just that was just not working for like two
Crashing just because our stream computer is kind of
okay, so
So you understand why they would want people to
Run
as not just a browser but as something that overlays your entire desktop experience and I
value add there I can
Having something like Google Hangouts
pull of
If you're watching yeah, we still need
desktop applications for things running inside of Gmail
Inside of my browser or inside Google Plus is ridiculous. It's absolutely ridiculous
That is actually any a very casual user. It's ridiculous
Multiple multiple people who are using multiple monitors. Okay, maybe you have a dedicated
You know what? You know what happens with hangouts? Oh, it covers all of your UI elements that you need
How am I supposed to trash that draft? I'm working. I guess I could close all of my hangout chats
It's ridiculous the fact that they think we don't need a dedicated desktop application for it or they haven't been our
And they're still forcing us to integrate into hangouts and all these other things guys. It's not ready yet
Maybe I'm just mad
Pile of crap and I mean
There is replacement Microsoft back MSN, please
If you're watching bring back MSN, please because it was the only thing that actually worked it had video chat
Oh cause all kinds of exploits causing all kinds of trouble the file transfers it had that actually worked
We finally figured out like yeah, okay, we just actually can't use Skype at all ever
I was searching for other things that popped into my mind was like Oh MSN. I was like, oh wait
And those live account whatever you want to I would still be able to use it today a lot of people I know are still
on
Is why I'm Google's move
Accounts
Accounts if anything has one of the worst track records I've ever seen and that's with my personal experience as a youtuber
the way that YouTube and Google
Gradually become more and more enmeshed all kinds of things are broke
This day and there's all kinds of legacy crap just fundamentally flawed
I mean things like joining other and then not being able to set
And check if I could try and then and then I I could undo them if it didn't work then that'd be great
But they've done it to me too many
Nothing and it's extremely full documentation for the whole thing
You
Applications
Stuff use it if you want make a new account for it and you're good to go and now it seems like
You
Hold it up there you go bruise or hickey depending on
Okay, so
Want to talk about the future of news?
Now I want to talk about the bruise on my arms. So people don't think it's a freaking pick
Let's talk about the future of news
So guy, um, I mean who would have expected me to ever say that Fox is the future of news. Oh
Oh
The irony
The past news
This should never have existed of news
It looks I mean the thing about this is it looks like a meme
It into mean
So Fox has introduced 55 foot her
Five inch tablets into their newsroom, which they call bats
What does that stand for big-ass TVs? No big big area touchscreen big
Okay, so I mean I don't like guns that people firing
are the bats
So there's a few problems with this
Is that it looks ridiculous?
It looks it looks like I'm too hard to be the starship
number two is
pixel density
You cannot simply and make a usage model or a user experience better you can't
And a maximum for so long what we were trying to do with
Mission of monitor technology was holy crap. We made it bigger and tea
Certain extent I mean every year at CES Sony
I
Went off bigger TV, none of that ever made it no because nobody wants a hundred inch TV or but me maybe
That you're doing real work on it's going to not necessarily be in bigger we need more pixel density
and they didn't even manage to make them more than
To this image for a moment here, so put yourself that close to your monitor
Okay, so it's about like holding my face
In terms of like what I can actually see at a time text is gonna look terrible
Absolutely terrible. You're you're you're it's not like you can actually use of the side
You
In terms of the pixels, it's like if you examine the pixels you'd see that all those memes out there
photoshops and
Is actually the original I've seen some great like ones with like space and Oompa Loompas
stations and like
Oh, yeah, you just like move stuff around it's okay
Is dying
Because they don't get it because everyone else on every other medium can have Twitter and doesn't need a 55 inch time
I mean, this is how we do Twitter
Okay, you're looking at our broadcaster dashboard
An old monitor that like we had lying around and we put on it, yeah
I mean, that's what's actually very so
Yeah, we got we got a bit of a kick out of that, you know, what why don't we do one more topic
Before we have our special guest total biscuit for those of you who don't know who our guest is today
But this yeah, this should be hit this one. All right
So in video, I'm gonna end up a rant
Right now. Okay. I'm not I'm not ready yet. Should we just pull them up? You know what do that?
Why don't we why don't we invite total biscuit to the show? I'm gonna go ahead and throw our
Guest lower third on here
Yeah headphones on
Right. Yep. I'm sure I'm trusting this guy to
The show is ready to rock. I'm gonna head over to the Twitter
I'm I I'm ready to die now because you know my life now and
And then a fair bit of
Probably our first our first for you is gonna be you're a bit of a polarizing character. You've been working on
Fans how's that going for you?
Let's just say the ideas are much easier to create than the
of those ideas and
And
kind of the wholesale
invention of the way that you interact with people online, which is something that I'm sure we've all developed over the course of over a
decade now and
It's difficult to get out of the you really want to get into it with someone you see someone that disagrees with you or more importantly
Says something about you. That's not true on the internet on us you want today? Yeah, they're telling lies on the internet
Is there a prime tell me
No, it's it's it is difficult I gotta say it's difficult to deal with and I think
If you want to really change your way that you interact people are not even just talking about fans of Tony
Just actively dislike you
Terrible stuff the internet about you. It requires an amount of discipline that I don't think I've
Well, that's fantastic, you know what I think that's a
Segment here for you for the half dozen people. We're watching our show and who have never heard of you before please
introduce yourself
and
My name is John Bain in real life. I'm better known as total biscuit or cynical Brit on tube and I
Probably the best way to describe my line of work would be I am a game critic
Okay, so game critic wise
I've here
The idea of
Taking a game playing some of it and then giving essentially a lie first in with the focus on
Realizing whether or not the game's any good taking the mechanics apart looking at the
options
For PC gamers and then coming to a conclusion as to whether or not it's worth your time
All right
Now tell me this one of the things that you have done in terms of bucking the general really conceived to be
conventional wisdom
Really long-form
You run seminar and they'll tell you well you've got 15 seconds to
Viewer you've got probably a few minutes to keep them engaged, but your engagement
I mean
even if you look at it in terms of well
He's got this many subscribers and this many of the people are actually watching every video and tuning in for 20
40 minute even longer content
How how have you how have you bucked that trend?
Well
I don't even believe the trend was there to begin with I think that it's a trend that
Came from the idea that the only people that would ever be watching your YouTube videos when you deal with gaming are between eight
Years old and that's completely false. It's just that
Very easy to impress and they're also very easy to build a rabid fandom out of you can influence somebody that's
Developing they're a bit young they don't really know what's going on
so you'll see these very popular channels that do very well as a result of that but
And of audience likes a very specific kind of content. So if you try and do anything else, well, good. Look getting out of
Kind of rut as opposed as the class clown which is these channels are on YouTube that professional
Court jesters, you know, they're kind of the village idiot people they watch them because like hey, look at how dumb this is
That's how that kind of thing works. But if you look at demographic
They are at a computer a lot and they want to have something running in the back
Listen to as they do whatever work they do or they've got a lot more flexibility, you know, they're in a
Position where they're just able to spend some time out to watch this kind of stuff or maybe they just come home for work
Thing that's not a
A cat that's been fed three pounds of crack
Or laid-back a little bit more focused
You can get people watching 45 minutes of an hour-long videos
My primary demographic is 25 to 32 years old and as a direct result
I think people are more than willing to watch longer form stuff just a lot of that demographics
A lot to watch longer form TV shows now and is willing to sit down for a day and watch like an
Entire season of a show they will do that if it's engaged
You know what? It's funny that because when I when I after I watched the first episode of bad
Which was only a couple weeks ago. I'm on season 5 now
You
Runtime not having realized about an hour long and not a
With commercial breaks baked in that I didn't have to watch. It's an hour-long show and I just looked like oh
shit
Because I am going this is going to consume my little while, but that doesn't mean that we can't do it now before
Before we move on I actually this ties in really well into one of the other
This is something that I get a lot and I'm sure you get I
Is how to become X how to become a youtuber to become a game critic where the perception seems to be?
That we get paid to sit and make day and now your comment cats on crack
Is interesting and I would like to tie this back to a comment that I got on YouTube the
viewer so someone
You know
YouTube videos is easy to which I replied
well
I think you'd actually be surprised at how much work goes into this kind of thing behind the scenes and someone replied saying
Okay, except it is easy like PewDiePie
He just plays games and how I'm doing it and gets millions thousands upon thousands of dollars
Very easy money in my opinion to which my rebuttal was will seem to think that PewDiePie is either in
Yes, I can't I can't sit through his comment. So I don't really know
You
And plays games makes millions of dollars
It's like saying a pro hockey player waves a stick around or an elite chef just put stuff and applies heat
There's a lot of hard work and a bit of magic that goes into six to them than the ones who succeed
You know what they're doing
Would you make the argument that the guys who are appealing to that lowest common denominator do are making easy money?
The
Thing about that is that everybody's doing it and only a tiny fraction of those actually successful
You can people like PewDiePie and mom and things like that all you damn well, please
But you have to accept ality that they have built their brand stronger
during than anybody else
Couple of years ago about someone like
Along I said that guy's gonna be a flash in the pan and he's gonna disappear very quickly
He is going to crest the wave of some kind of hype train of my kind of trend. Yeah, exactly
It's same with a lot of people said about
Here a couple of months where the popularity and that'll disappear people said the same about me when I did Wow
And I was able to transfer that and continue because at that point I'd built brand strength
Tation and that's exactly what people like PewDiePie have actually done
They've built their brand and they focus more on building that brat
Myself certainly because I my content speak
for me and then he is all about the brand and
Everyone who watches him is a bro and they're part of this community. It's like a little township of 10 million
Back each other up but
Belonging and for good or ill that actually does help drive that channel forward and yes
I'd say that making videos like his is relatively easy in comparison to other
If you take a channel at the sketch comedy and spends a week writing the sketch and editing it out and things like that
versus hey, I'm gonna play this game and split into 20-minute chunks and
And I'll put some little subtypes to accept the bits that I think are funny
yeah, that is a lot easier, but I can guarantee he does not do this for one hour a day and then just
He spends his time building his brand and making deals behind the scenes and
Ensure that his channel remains
And I mean to me it's it's one of those things we feel like a lot of detractors who feel like someone doesn't
Need to understand better that there's there's hard work and everyone needs it and then there's
Talent. I mean you look at what someone like PewDiePie does
It's difficult things of whether it's time-consuming
Fire in the way that his audience want all the time
I had someone criticize me saying well
all I do is stand there for you know, seven or eight minutes and talk about a product and
You know, it doesn't take me very long. You know what? You're right. It doesn't take me very long when I
I
Studio on Friday to shoot for them. It takes me
Has a value to it's about more than just it takes me and I spend a lot of time on things as well
I'd like to talk to you about sort of the whole perception of selling out as well. I mean, I think this is something
You
Yeah, and they tie in really nicely together as well you're talking about the inherent value of a personality, right
I think it's healthy that they know because then they understand the business and they're less likely to get upset at the notion that
Yes, people are kind of off your back viewers are the product
the customer we are
You
Other companies when you look at say the sponsorship eyes have on your show
That company your audience that's the point and they view money in return. That's how the sponsor
It's actually a very healthy model because it allows all this content to be free
So you don't have to pay a cape grips. You don't have to pay per view to actually watch our stuff. It's all free and
It comes from the audience it's not necessarily that you went down a raft and did backbreaking work
It's not how the world works guys, I'm sorry
I kind of wish that it was a meritocracy in that respect the harder you work the more you got paid
But it really isn't
these companies
audience that you can gather and that's where the selling out point comes in because
Companies want to get at your audience and they want to get at your audience to market their particular
Product in a way that they feel is best and they may approach these so-called influencers
This is a term that's used around you. You are an influencer. Yeah, and that's true
You are you you have an audience you have the power to influence them, but you have the power to do so as the audience
to you and they believe what you are saying and
You
If you decide the idea to compromise your opinion then Frank lose that audience, yeah
Sell out because what you're basically saying there is not I'm saying is I'm selling you
because I was I'm selling you as the product to the advertiser and I'm willing to
It's because someone is giving envelope under the table and I've got to ask you why on earth would you think that I would do
that
Youtuber would do that. How could I do that?
It's absurd. It's we need you know, we wouldn't we wouldn't sell you it's crazy and the thing
It's YouTube thing to end if I want yeah being a youtuber and
King a living and building a new business around
personality that tells people
theology if I wanted that immediately then start saying that you know any
Expensive thing with lots of margin that people want to give me money to promote and guys trust me
Sir list is Intel Nvidia AMD has been added to that. These are
Where I can with a straight face recommend their products. No problem. I can't afford to lose you guys. I
Legitimately need you guys
Yeah, and you got them because you were honest to them in the first place, right and you're not going to sell them out
Little brown envelope because you'll make more money in the long run by how and you're right
Why on earth would any of us want to throw this away?
As an end freedom
point in our lives
Kind of media that we want to produce and reach a large audience something that was impossible a decade ago
I was in high school and no guidance counselor told me about this
Yeah
Impossible like absolutely true actually to what you guys were talking about earlier with
The not much work goes into an idea is actually both game reviewers and hardware reviewers were two different stuff
But there's a huge amount of research for both of us
It's what a bit a ton about the game is reviewing and all the other games in the genre so you can come
We're reviewing and all the other hardware in the genre so that we can kind of research and actually does the time
Back out
Essentially that you use and that I used to know a lot about hardware years ago when I used to post on the forums
And I would keep up to date with everything and I could be a fairly reliable source around the
Mobile Barton era I could tell you how to overclock an AMD Barton. No problem at all
I'll tell you how to use an aces star rice kind of
Cooling you but these days I've come
Not a lot of hardware knowledge at all
Stuff that I need to build a PC and keep mine running so it doesn't set on fire
Right now
It's a great point people ask me to do games in much the same way that they probably
The reason is because I've been out of
Not knowing that there was a game released through oh that innovated that exact and did it better
And that is where my inherent value is to my
sponsors as well
Yeah, it's absolutely true and that value disappeared
There is even a moment's hesitation among the viewer base that they believe that knowledge in your recommendations of
Other than facts in your honest opinion
So I think that cell is actually a term that get correctly a lot of the time by viewers
Yes, I have where they're sell out
But what sellout would mean is compromising the way that we do our work and and and explain
And I think this leads in really well to what
How ten you our grasp is right as youtubers we are at the absolute mercy of
Google right now. I mean I I ranted about this a little show the way that Google Plus
integrated into YouTube and the way that Google attempts to take tighter and
The reins as time goes on of this of this YouTube platform that they've done
I mean, do you go a day without thinking if the whole thing exploded right now?
You know, what's my exit strategy?
Well, I don't I think about it exploding tomorrow, but I do have about three exit strategies
So that helps but if I didn't have exit strategies that absolutely be worrying about it initially
This is amazing Wow, look at this gravy is fantastic, but what if it out tomorrow? Where do I go?
Do I go back agency?
It building my brand to the point where I have an escape room and now yes, I do I've got
It is tenuous and as a result a lot of us will look to
Money as we can from now because we have no idea when it to end
The hope of course is that it never does and the 20s from now there will be a you some equivalent little
You
But right now
good end and it's
interest to try and make as much money as I can without compromising my principles of my audience and
To put it in a bank account and put it into my 401k to make sure that I actually have
Money if this whole thing goes tits up. So let's let's get into some real meaty discussion topics here
I wanted to pick stuff that has a good
I mean not that I'm saying what we've been talking about up till now hasn't been meaty
But these guys want which is hardware gaming news and we've got some stuff that overlaps pretty darn
Well, so let's start with the stroller demo. I'm assuming you check this out, correct?
Absolutely
It's
Owl this look strange balls to the wall
and I'm actually
The video here it is
Different types and
Take this away give us a brief outline if I want to hear your
Feel having seen the video you've seen
All
Right. Well funnily enough. I felt better about the steam controller before I saw the video as opposed to anything else
steam controllers idea is very
In controllers the last big one that we had for
We're not going to count motion controls because generally core gamers don't use them. It was the dual shock one, which is about
And that innovated the dual stick design
Was then used in several
Of dual touch pads with haptic feedback could potentially shift things over again. Can they be better some way than
if they can't those base point in them existing and
When I looked at it, I thought
possibility
Haptic feedback itself has got to be incredibly good because we're told it doesn't have the physical limits of sticks if I take my
I reached the limits of where it can go quickly with the
Haptic device with the touch pads not so much and we're relying on that feedback to say guys
Here's the 20 further and then when I saw
Civilization 5 demonstration is exactly problem that is with touch pads on
laptops a
television
by controller and it's
You have to keep some flicking your thumb on it over and over and over again
And that's the exact thing that
The
That as well it works a number of different it can work more like a stick you want but this one was just
Yeah, so for those of you watching who haven't seen the video. It's just straight. It's a touch pad and
You
Didn't see any precision platform. I was I didn't see actual portal puzzles solved
I wasn't convinced that this was experience that could
Thing that bothered me about the Civ 5 demos, I mean the first thing
When he saw this roller was holy crap. I can play civilization from my couch. I would make the argument
Because it's still gonna have small UI elements and it's gonna be a very long time before that kind of an issue gets addressed and touch
Yeah, we'll always all
Always be slower than for any kind of precision
Any kind of distance movement which is an awful lot of when you're playing a PC game. I believe you
You
Video that he was using it in yeah one to one you can make it
Where if you hold it on one side, it will keep going
So if it's on a big game like that, you can a precision of it, but then have it
If that is gonna be worth it so then that's the whole thing and it is they have to keep feedback
You
Future he asked at the end of the video to make sure that people comment on it
Tell him what games they want to see and if they want to see but something to see through a video is the half
So it has to be really good. No until anyone gets their hands on it
Think of the csgo demo then
That wasn't too bad, honestly
But feeling he could have done a fairly similar thing with sticks if you notice took from actually headshots
A good player someone that maybe plays a lot of Call of Duty or battlefield on a controller could probably do a similar thing
Yeah, so that doesn't hurt
Here's that could be the real tricky thing. I mean easy
Pads work, but we don't want it to work like touch pads because they're bad. So why would we want that on our pad?
so what kind of adaptation fired from and
Wait, there'll be two kinds adaptation required. We've got the guys who have to adapt
That from keyboard and mouse which I would imagine is going to be a completely different process. Yeah, that's gonna be tricky
Oh, I mean, I think the tell is just to actually try it out
I read the nice blog post by the fellow who made super meat boy. That's what I would have loved to see
You
Right it apparently play meat boy on this thing accurately and that in itself is more of a test than anything that they showed
There but I think to show variety in that initial video. Yeah, the one that I thought was kind of funny, but but I get it
What was that last game called?
Papers, please. So this yes, like like like a passport office
And I was like, okay, that's
You
Gaming perspective
Maybe now I'm interested
necessarily want to play FPS I have a nerdy tech couch master
Cushions that sit on either side of this deck that sits on time
It's fantastic I so I have a desire for control. Yes. He's right. It's right there. So he just lifted it up
So I don't need that I wanted to play Angry Birds for and the haptic feedback, you know gave me
You know how how you know what the tension was like
Back, I mean, I would agree to see Android support for a device like this
But it's something valve hasn't talked about it all up till this point in time
No, that's very true there
You have very much pressed the idea that this thing will be legacy compatible in the sense that it can bunch of different control
Methods, but what I'm more interested in all methods very specifically designed for use on this thing
Which likely going to require either
You know, they've obviously already done for portal or for third-party devs to get on board with it and say yeah
Actually, we will add direct support for it and experiment with it to make sure that we get the right kind of results. I
Imagine that the success rate
I think all oh
You still there
One thing to talk about too is he talked about developers having to get behind and
Steve and behind it but one really nice thing too is gonna be
On layout
On their own and release it on the workshop you can be able to download it. So for really
But
That you should have some sort of other ender and you were using this controller. You could also release a
Workshop for it as well. Yeah, but that's a lot more work, isn't it?
You get onto it because honestly the three
Is already what I consider the controller standard for PCs if you're not using a keyboard and mouse because that's already there
Three 60 controller is in spite of all the game devs that work on the Xbox platform and in spite of Microsoft's I mean
Influence in 360 controller support is still terrible for crying out
By everything else it's like I'm going through tutorial and I'm being asked to press the left trigger on my keyboard
That's really useful
Exactly, exactly. It's really frustrating
Add on this topic, I think we pretty similar sort of take on this. I'm taking a very wait and see approach
Forward to see ya. It's a wait and see. Yes, wait and see
Let's move on to the next one, which is a great discussion. I
appear
You
Well, he's more of a hardware guy yes about a week and a half ago
Interview we were hanging out at the airport together
I said a station for an Xbox one are the last generation of consoles as we know them last
dedicated eyes gaming box that is expected to go into your living room and
You
Are because I think a lot of it is due to very negative publicity that
Xbox one and Microsoft's attempt to differentiate it from a gaming console and make it more of a room companion and I think
that people are
And thinking about how long an Xbox one are good
You long gating as time goes on to the point where we
Comment made by one of the Tekken guys saying that I've likely
We see another generation of dedicated gaming consoles the same way we have
well
Prize me if the ps5 was basically just of us in the cloud, right?
I think maybe they might be jumping the gun slightly on that one. I think it's coming
I don't think there's a way to avoid
somehow in some inexplicable fashion the piece
Vastly regains its dominance which I find highly unlikely
You could basically email in your fridge now. This is not a unique and funnily enough the same thing the television space
And nobody's talking about that. The newer generation televisions are getting smarter. I've owned two generations now
All the functionality that the Xbox one is offering to a television watch
So on that consumes and the media it's very good at dealing with that. I've got voice can
ITV Netflix and me there and I can navigate with my hand in the air
I don't even need to use a remote
Get the result out of that and that's gonna keep happening and it's gonna happen in a faster rate because televisions are coming out all
the time
Those are coming out every eight to nine years. There's gonna be new TVs
More to the point this quality can be upgraded. I just upgraded my TV with a quad core processor
Yeah, yeah, I just plugged it in installed it and I got a
2013 version it's modular consoles are not and as a direct result these features are going way faster than console manufacturers
could ever
Look at the company's in I mean how much does so?
By building PlayStation functionality into their TVs. They've already done it with their tablets
Play uses the X they want the
The
Interface is the PlayStation 3. Yeah, so they you know, they're even building but devices that are not gaming related
Yes for isn't out yet and it anyone telling me that PlayStation 5 is gonna be a box that sits next to your TV
To give yourself a shake and wake up because it's not necessarily gonna be I agree with you a hundred
I don't think that the latencies will be good enough even
For much of the world for that to be a possibility
even if it keeps progressing at
Exponential rate of improvement that it which it isn't, you know, but is in some places and that's exactly the problem
I don't think that's gonna
It thought we were gonna see the closed platform game consoles go away
You might see devices like Ouya or Nvidia shield things running on Android or iOS
It's Ubuntu mobile, whatever it happens
Also versus a dedicated box that sits there which is to me just absolutely ridiculous
and the other thing is the other TV players are gonna want a piece of this action and
TVs have become
commodity horrible horrible business as
Someone who worked at a retailer that was trying to break into tell you there's not a lot of mark
There's not a lot of marketing funds
You on it anymore every household already TV that's big enough and this ties in well to one of the things we talked about
Which is that display size display sizes are big enough. We don't need bigger display. Yeah, you can't get any bigger them. Sorry. Yeah
You can't fit them in the house
Television in this room, it's impractical. Yeah
Actually the total biscuit brought up real modularity of the TV
Maybe there's gonna be like the Samsung modularity part and then maybe they'll have like the game port. Yeah, then you can just like click
Be a little bit better at gaming maybe you can make a graphics device my TV birds on it, which is actually runs surprisingly well
There are game functionality is starting to be built into this stuff and into play between what's in
The
Pocket that being your smartphone or your tablet it's happening more and more it's very easy to now interface just I have a Google Internet
On that YouTube videos now on the
It's a credit. Yeah, just like snap like that very very easy. And honestly, you got to think about third-party game devs as well
They have a lot to bomb at the current
market going away
Spoken out Sony like a VP at Sony spoke out against
consoles the guy
responsible for
Please recent dominance with a great triple-a exclusive after Drake great triple-a exclusive don't
Mutually assured destruction yet thermonuclear war we
You
Let's see it. They don't want to be sinking this amount of money into this stuff
They would prefer
Have to they would prefer just to be able to make games that can sell to more people the other guys
You know Sony makes a triple-a from one of the in-house studios, but they're then able to sell to
Box and differentiate with the device differentiate with the controller
With the quality of this that you're providing with your live arm
I mean, there's so many other
That game consoles can each other now how it was 20 years ago when it was, you know who had
Mario and who had the hedgehog? I mean, why are we still in this mentality doesn't make any sense anymore
Behind these guys and what they didn't sing and
Sideswipe them completely was the rise of mobile and social gaming and we have had a drop in the amount of games
So yeah, we're looking at 17 percentage in the console marketplace last year probably going to be helped a lot this year by GTA
say
But there are very few titles that come
Odd where are we in five years and how exactly do we make our money because we're not selling consoles are making a loss
So
Time a game is sold so we need more games
Absolutely, absolutely. I mean I think that I mean I think one of the things that people misunderstood a lot about the whole I think console
Prediction and the way this business is changing prediction is I said mobile devices are gonna pick up black. I didn't
That you're gonna play all on your phone. That's meant you're still
You
Powers it is going to be
Already, I mean have you played with the Nvidia shield at all? Yeah, I played with it and it's like oh, this has got nice functionality
It's got good onboard power
But I can also relay something for a more powerful base station in my house
Can play PC quality games on this little thing and that's unbelievable to me
You
You can see that interfered with your experience
Only a little bit and it was on a baby unit if I of packs. Yeah packs is why
the most rammed why
history of ever and
Maybe two moments where it froze up a little bit aside from that. It was very difficult to notice. So I mean imagine
You
Ask the viewers guys if you have Twitter questions about any of the
You've talked to total business the show here guys hit us. We'll get him to do a Twitter blitz before
You
How
What tell me about any weird internet famous moments because you must get it off it
I think total internet views you're somewhere between double and triple
My lifetime and I get wrecked a fair bit. How does it how do you feel about it? Tell me any awkward stories you have
Well, I made the decision to go to North Carolina. So no one would notice me
So that worked pretty well and until I ended up in the universe. I turned up in Raleigh in Durham for like oh, yeah
People know me around here. So that's the way that that goes
I I think I've been very fortunate in the fact that most of the stuff
Interaction wise is not really being all it's like
There's a lot of sort of double taking that goes on if somebody recognizes your voice or anything along those lines
I was in it at one point and
passed me and then asked me if I was who I was then asked for an autograph on a napkin and
Acute, but it's never really been weird or awkward strangely enough the worst thing I never says. Oh
A little bit socially awkward. Maybe they don't go out all that much. But if that's the worst sin
Are guilty of in your life then?
You know, you're a saint in my opinion
So it it's all really been actually very very cool indeed
But the whole thing is just weird the whole idea one could recognize you in a supermarket from some gaming video
You made on the internet is insanity. And if you tell told me ten years ago, that was possible. I've laughed at you
Come from the viewers
Awkwardness, especially at the beginning for me. So once tell actually two stories
I only get recognized by my voice because I'm not I'm not a game streamer
I think I'm more more
I'm talking to a co-worker at the McDonald's down the street from work. We were there because I felt like punishing my
Hey McDonald
Anyway the guy I'm talking to my I turns around and he goes I know that voice
And I was I was like, oh, that's the weirdest thing ever because it was one of the very early ones
I
Was at a mall with my girlfriend at the time and
Someone walked up and asked for my autograph. I kind of I kind of froze like oh I don't really do that
And she she just smacked me in the I was like she was like why did you say that that was horrible
You
Say I'm
I'm not I'm not Tom Cruise where people walk up and tell me that they saw me jumping around on a couch all the time
It's I'm just not
Yeah, I got used to it pretty quickly up going to a lot of events
interacting that even
In the eSports scene or just in gaming in general that have developed these followings don't necessarily know how to act with fans
or maybe they just
They they feel uncomfortable doing it because they themselves were so
Going and irritating when I was 18 years old and I find irritating is a very you able to have in university which
A course of very strong drinking and
Then I was able to carry that on into later life and when I go to an event
I'll just I'll just hang out with anybody like probably to the someone's gonna knife me those days
But I'll hang out with anyone and we'll go for drinks and we'll go for lunch together
And we'll talk and we'll play munchkin and yell at each other and it'll be great
And I think maybe you just have to embrace in that
Rio and you'll have a lot more fun if you do and you know, obviously, I know you guys are a part
You experience this exact same thing
It's so much fun when you just get to meet people and you automatically share interests
Because you do this for a living and they watch you so it's like oh great
We already gel on some base level. We don't even have to worry about it's like, so do you like it?
Like we had a lot. Oh, no, we're in the game
Our sponsor speaking of the way spawn that not just us but also our view where w gave us a whack ton
And we announced we're doing it ahead of time so people who
Us, you know, hey, I just want to shake your hand. Hey shake my hand have an external heart. You're at it
I mean that kind of stuff. I think I get to me really excited makes makes this this
occupation it's fun for me
My favorite fan interaction acts was one group of guys. I randomly met and there's like four or five of them
In humanity, which is like not something you'd really expect to do with fans, but was incredibly fun
And another one I had my whole group of friends. We ended up playing a giant game of ninja with a few fans
Like the the stand-up game. It was actually really fun. Yeah
So yeah, it's the best thing. Oh Twitter blitz is a little
As quick as possible and we blow through as many and I think we've got
Money here for you go through as many until you as until you get as you want
So number easy peasy. We need more than 20. This is come on John. I'm
YouTube channel, I guess I'll
My advice is at this point in time unless you have some serious backing
Get a real job and do it as a hobby. Don't expect this to be a career right off the bat. Go ahead
Yep, never ever go into this thinking
being of doing this as as a hobby because you
For it and that passion will cater to your viewers and hopefully that will have success and the best advice I could ever give to
People is start by starting a YouTube channel, yeah
All right. Next one. Do you think a stronger YouTube presence such as you know guys?
You who focus on PC made PC more?
I think that it did
until gamers that came to
it and eventually ended up getting back into gaming PCs, but
Wing was gonna happen. Anyway, I don't know if we necessarily just rode the way
First place really difficult to say I'd like to assume that we did Corey Gibson
Excited for and I'm not calling you Corey Gibson. The question is from
our
Mantle, are you familiar?
You
Involved getting DirectX
Window, which would be wonderful go to Windows 8 to use DirectX 11.2 features. Thank you very bloody much Microsoft
Anything that takes the key from Microsoft is a good thing
unfortunately, I use and
So it's probably not going to help
But I like the idea that stuff like OpenGL is kind of having a bit of a resurgence. So hopefully we get more of that
I
Well, we we thought the hats would be funny just because you know, well, it's it's
They're always funny he's our guest did you think it was funny did you see I
Expected hats to be involved the irony
To be taken seriously, please don't have that problem
All right, um Total Biscuit, do you believe PC gaming will ever go away one?
Well, but a PCs in order for PC away
Basically, if you can put a game on and it will have a game on it put it on a ti-83 calculator
Bloody thing. So yeah, I have them on computers the question
This is
Since of the PC there and the power is still there what form it takes doesn't really matter agreed Marcus asked
And he asked what the bet what's the best but I think worst is gonna be a lot more entertaining
So why don't we stick with that? Well, this is a lot easier recently. It's gotta be day one Gary's which was I just
Apparently used most of the default stuff from the UD
He
Because the size right on the deep unreal bananas, so it's like banana trees and all these models
To the point of beyond comedy to the point where this waste of everybody's time
So that was just off I'd say that's it's worse than the war Z
Some value to the gigantic scam Gary's incident is quite literally will Drek
probably that I
There's no doubt being a games on the past couple years that have been equally
Plastic okay. Well, I
For the topics we wanted to go through with you. I just want to say thank you very much for
It's my pleasure the Twitter followers. I mean I I tried to engage with the
You
And when they said total biscuit I kind of went well
Yeah, you're taking the time to interact with us interact with our audience if you if you think there's anyone left viewing who doesn't know
What you're about and doesn't think?
Pretty cool. I'm or this guy's a total ass clown
And
Thank you very very much for joining us I really hated it, but it's up thanks a lot guys it was a fun show
PC gaming critique news and
beingly unhealthy amount of hoffs
That's YouTube
But I also have a stock sports channel and a Starcraft 2 eSports team axiom eSports
You can find out everything you want to know about them
YouTube comm slash total biscuit
To me sports sponsors that being a planet side to the keyboards. All right. Thanks, man
Take care and talk to you again sometime
Look guys, have fun. Have a good one
All right, guys
Was that was definitely one fun guest segments for me just because it's not very often. I
have an opportunity
Are more experience and
More successful than me on the you
So I hope we didn't bore too much with some of that business talk about you know
audience interaction and engagement and YouTube and how how about it as youtubers, but
That was that was very interesting guys again
So make sure you're following make sure you're following him because very very actually have to confirm
I'm not much of a gaming
consumer I had
You
Okay, I need to know what I'm talking about somewhat so I spent hours
For content and that it's actually very entertaining but in a very different from a lot of the other content
It's more designed and you can tell like radio to the point where?
Have it in the background while you're doing something else
He's got a great voice which is some a benefit that I don't have
He's got a great voice so you can just sit and catch up and it's very soothing relaxed and I
Consume out of gaming content
One of the main things that I like about it for anyone who hasn't watched
WTF series is amazing. So whenever steam has like a summer sale or winter sale or weekly or weekend sale. There's always
Everywhere GOG or whatever if you're interested in a game that you may not have heard
Linus said you can have it have while you're doing other things and just talk about the game and
sometimes especially during this
enough time to do
That comes up on that sale so while I'm working on other things
There's so sure boom by that ever published the when show starting thing on YouTube
I was wondering why I selected it and yeah, cuz we I mean having a great guest like
At another thousand to fifteen hundred live viewers. I
Mean you saw me click it
Didn't you didn't okay. Well, there's the thing public like it was right there
There's not a whole lot that we can do about it, um, well it's our next topic here, I mean there's a
Tough to talk about today. I don't think quite as much as the last two weeks, but there is still quite a bit
Joe so they they ripped off
Of using all capital letters and having a four letter word as the name of your console
Other than that, it's it's a little this is from mad
You
Pull in the console has been on the PC side
Although they are making a pushing they're pushing pretty hard with with lot product lines
Like the rat series mice that they have so this acquired companies and they've acquired companies as well companies like sci-tech that did
foothold in PC, but
Let's talk about this a little bit. So mojo is a micro console for Android
The original article was on tech radar and it was posted by gazer 90
And
I don't have much to say. I haven't already said this is still more validation for my
That not only do I that consoles in their current?
platforms and and with with console exclusively are gonna go away, but there are
in company
investing big money
belief as well, so
You want to go run?
Sure, give me a sec. I think that's on the dock. Yes, it is. So it comes with a 1.8 gigahertz tiger for
16 gigabytes of internal storage, although it has micro SD expansion so that could get pretty ridiculously big pretty fast
The built-in RAM Wi-Fi Bluetooth and Android 4.2 jellybean and it comes in at 250 bucks
Like
Yeah, I don't know what really common yeah, I know I saw that one thing that I noticed was really common
We're I got it blows you out of the water in the specs department. Of course it does. It's been a little while
That's like this is going to happen, especially Android consoles
I think you're gonna leapfrog each other like crazy like yearly at least
Yeah, and one thing that's especially with this one is you can tie it in your Google Play account directly
So if you did another iteration because they're gonna be updating really fast
Load all your games again, which is really nice. It's really cool. I mean
I mean for couch gamers and
And
Okay, well that dates the pricing of Nvidia shield in my mind in a big way because shield has a controller and a bunch
of hardware and
it has the custom technology with the game streaming that
required some dev work is
50 bucks I would say and to the people out there. Well Nvidia shield should be 99
Planet I think a lot of those people are coming from the same was at the beginning which was carrot all about
It's a $700 smartphone with what I'm saying, is this or there should be another model doesn't have that there should be a
streaming model that is cheap doesn't have all the Android stuff because
and with some personal
Promas they don't want to just the Android part is the more expensive part if you want to have
Shipping yada yada yada
Okay, fair enough. I guess I can't really I can't really argue that any part of that was
You know what? I would like to take a moment to do
I'm so breaks. So guys I
I
Think this will work. Hey, look at that that worked so squarespace.com
I'm just gonna go ahead and fix this for
calm is the easy, but did okay. Oh
He didn't fix it
10% off for October. Oh, so don't that anyway squarespace.com is the easy
Or just general nation for your company whatever else it happens to be they've got a
Custom tailored for different application they handle the hosting on that they handle the tools that
Geo cities and you know dread this or drag-and-drop that with advantage actually dig into the CSX
You can have this so, you know if I tell you know Ed's
Boom it's act site was never down really simple to use
Face.com slash Linus and get 10% off what 10% like
With code Linus 10 actually funny is I didn't even realize this I'm wearing my Squarespace shirt
Realize that they were cuz I just threw up because we were going to film at NCIX
I always change into my NCIX shirt when I get there. So I was like, oh this shirt
I'm gonna put it on because they shirt when we started the
partnership and
Yeah, so I was like, oh yeah, this shirt is like nice and put this on anyway, so I happen today
So guys that's where Tom thank you so much for sponsoring the show and I
Think that's pretty much it. If you want to check out an example Squarespace website go over to Linus com
it gives you a great of how they dynamically adjust your
Access to in terms of bandwidth is depending on what you need or how hard we've hit that site in the past
You
Sites just by saying hey, this manufacturer will go check it out. I think that speaks volumes about
It's actually kind of fun
stream once
Service attack. Oh, it's not giving them a whole bunch of
Snap back and then actually have real traffic for most of it because it's not a DDoS it works
Boss in almost every single situation
anyways
Users can't buy next-gen games. Well, they could buy them. Well, yeah run them
I guess they could they could buy and then like look at it in their steam libraries
Duty ghosts and watchdogs need 64 gigs of
64 bit OS, you know what I have to say about this about bloody time. Yep
I have no problem with it and like okay a ton of people. Oh my god, 50% can't buy it
They're not gonna make any money. I think a huge part of the reason why 50% of PC users don't have these specs
Not too worried about 64 bit OS one, but the six gigs of RAM
You don't need it. No, so so now that they do need it they might go to the store
Add to light on fire. It's not that expensive yet. I but it's not as cheap as it was
No, that's true people a while ago. So I mean it's chicken and egg thing
there hasn't been a compelling reason to upgrade your CPU or your memory for
You
Percentage of users that will two things one have multiple computer
Desktop which I'm actually gonna play games on desk into my laptop so I can talk to friends for
Before computers that I have on Steam
Ready for it, right, but I don't you never took the hardware sir, because you just click click click. Yeah. Yeah
You
For gigs leave two slots open
We're just gonna go click ready. Yay, like there's nothing to do. So yeah, I don't think that
And I mean, I think that we're we're finally heading into a time
Develop next-gen consoles and one bridge the more powerful PC hard looks have been built up over the last
And people are going to want to its games is getting more demanding things like stereoscopic 3d whether it's on a display
Don't necessarily not agreement that that's a terrific experience
3d, you know not naming
Oculus
Whatever it whatever it be where it's gonna get more demanding and then even for flat panel gaming
They get more demanding to fork it will be a thing very
He has become more of a thing, I mean those cheapo Korean on eBay you it's funny because you go back at
AMD had a slide at 14 event. That was the rise of
Monitors and go back at
In 1080p resolutions and cheapo monitors on Ebay
Growing the cost do yeah, I have to get a
Price to end users reflect the actual cost is display manufacturers need to get over
people
dollar TVs, you know
$1,000 for a TV and a thousand
You
This is not in monitor size but in monitor resolution which I personally feel very strongly definitely is very important
Another thing that caught me off guard with this one is cod requiring
It's of space. That's I
Know quite a few people that since the SSDs became
generally affordable
Oh, yeah, that might change that's that's gonna be over
Really I mean you talk to I've guys I mean those of you who have been following us speaking of sponsors we have
In digital and talk to them very frankly
Do you think people are storing and I'm like
I mean as much as she'll might release a one terabyte class SSD or Samsung might release a one terabyte class SSD
These are still
You
Gaming not on a drive that actually does nothing
See larger and larger games because one of the things that I really noticed about
4k at the AMD event was holy crap. These textures look terrible with this kind of pixel. They all look like ass
It's kind of like when you moved up to 1600 by 12
You
You know when the block and the texture is this big
Everything has to keep up image quality to keep improving to me
4k gaming is going to drive a big change in the way that every
Oh at 50 gig games are going to be the norm not moving forward
You
Discs a little bit. Well, hey
Good gig
Yeah, that could hold us off for a little while longer yet. Seriously because now when you can download a game
pretty much never be bigger than
Bad to download overnight
I know quite a few people that if they had to download a 50 gigabyte game they could wait weeks and when you can mail
A disk around for four bucks or whatever
It's like oh, okay
We're moving we're moving backwards
The way the technology works, you know, this is funny because we filmed something at Intel campus once back with NCIX tech tips and
Because of their legal team had to review the footage before I could take away with me
They were like, oh, well, you can't take the footage with you. So
We'll
We'll mail it to you
Really? So I we went our separate ways their legal team reviewed the footage. They were like, yeah, we need there's a customer name here
They're made drive blare that big
Careful with this stuff
Okay, what's your mailing address? I was like, come on, let's FTP this. Let's do something
Because the way of their security works at their campus
You
P and do this they couldn't do that
I was like, this is one of the most technologically advanced companies in the world. They can't
logically advanced systems and like
To me those things where I'm sitting here going
They're like across their yeses they probably has it
TP or their own sure they do actually honestly, it's Intel they probably have their own but like but it's funny because
That is still difficult to just send a file to someone
Struggle with attachment size limit or with people who don't know how to use FTP and you're just like, oh
We use then high tail
Speaking of which when we only introduced our rebranding for the live stream the WAN show people complained about I heard a complaint in a long
time
Well have got I've certainly gotten over this roaming
Charges roaming data charges roaming text charges
roaming phone charges
The verge this is post on Linus tech tips forum by mr. If knack I think that's what he's going for here team
Says unlimited global
Being at no extra charge go it's 128 kilobytes a second
but still that's enough to do a lot of what you really need to do when you're on the road and one of his main
Comments actually is we found quote unquote
quote
We found that a lot of our users were just turning off. They're going to airplane mode. Basically when they were traveling
That's what I do because it will
This that part isn't a quote but like I can't remember exactly how he says it
but basically it would screw them over so there's
And he doesn't want that to be a thing. They want them to be able to still even if it's not that great of an experience
It will constantly because you're crazy while you're traveling you to get the fastest they can pop and
You can do it
Super expensive. So I mean everyone suffers from this but here's the here's the message I got from Bell when I traveled to Hawaii
$25 for 50 minutes 50
Texts is a travel bundle, which is highway robbery and a travel bundle then
That airplane mode on because the rates are
45 per minute including long distance. Thanks
75 cents per text and
$6 per meg for data $6 per meg
I mean basically what they're doing is they are strong arming you into buying a mobile and
Then even then the bundle is so small that you're still afraid to use it
You don't end up and they just made a whack
And then in his situation you have is that you can you can do all your social media
Instagram you can Instagram wait, you can probably stream minor. I mean being at events like g13 for AMD
it was like
Weater or check
I mean, this is the yahoo article about this. Yahoo Finance suggests that maybe it's unnecessary because
you know in texting services like
It already yeah, you know what whoever wrote idiot yeah because
It is true everyone would have watches no one would need an iPhone
There's a lot of places that it's and you're not 100% and why are we accepting the
The u.s. Which is the borderless border actually, they're really aggressive
You
Yes, they have multiple
Yes, and I know that but it is an unguarded border or just unguarded border it has more stretches of
Well, yeah, because there's more
That's not the point the point is that compared to the borders in a lot of countries
Not a big compared to compared to the I can just use a driver's license for a long time
I could just use a driver's license to drive down into the u.s. I don't need a visa. I don't need a passport
It's I mean to me the idea that you know the second
Like the telcos are really good at this. They do it sometimes both actually get over and then like certain Korea
They're like, nope, you're in the States
You
This is the way I would have imagined the carriers would have wanted it to work was that they could Billy
Because then they could all users. Well, we're the good guy
Us when you're when you're roaming on their network, there's nothing we can do if they were
They would have gotten together in a room with cigars and dogs playing on the wall
They would have but they would have come up with that idea because then they could have done it forever
they could have all done it forever the way it's your carrier is the one actually so
mobile revealed that
percent of the room
Nothing yes, so they
You
All the other carriers, yeah, whatever you can charge our users very little to use your will just charge your users
These are I bet you they actually tried and I bet you places like carrier
I mean t-mobile still made a minor player
But this could take a big chunk out of the out of the market share of someone in T where it's a GSM
It's a GSM network. So people gravitate towards it so that they can take their phone somewhere and use it
especially when it's carrier locked and then
These guys could be a great alternative
Phone calling it is not is not included. It's not unlimited. So it's 20 cents a minute, but at least that's
Reasonable at least if for three minutes, it's not five
I'm roaming. I'm like, yo, I'm roaming seconds. Go. Yeah. Yeah
And I wouldn't have to feel like that
I think I remember reading something in there too, like long-distance phone plans. I think it's extra a month and they
Was that yeah, I wanted a roaming plan it just includes me being allowed to be down in the States from time to time
No
You have anti-competitive practice
Alleged thing for the most part, but it seems to have been
Fairly on the money. There's there's there's some evidence. It's yeah. Yeah
smoking gun
It's on it and no one was standing around when the gun went off and like like there
Yeah, there's a few guns. So
I'm just gonna say allegedly even if it's been proven already
I don't want to get in trouble here, but allegedly origin PC. So it's a boutique system builder in the States was paid
to remove
GPU options and not only that but make very public statements
So this is posted by tech fanatic on the forum make very quick statements about how because of Nvidia GPUs better
Reliability and better stability. They were ditching AMD graphics cards entirely
They were really public about it basically like a
smear campaign and
publicity campaign was
so that's that's what it looked an awful lot like the the the original that
Accurate is actually probably one of the better ones
Anyway the original art the article on semi-accurate that's the most recent one outlines a lot of the details of why this
Probably happened and why it makes a lot of sense because the timing doesn't it's a dental
Yeah, not at all rumors and I'm not gonna name any I don't want to be cited saying this part
but I've heard rumors that the
Portional to the lost business that was projected that the companies would I'm would would be
Would have to suffer by not AMD graphics cards. Okay? Oh
It was also rumored they get early
Nvidia's upcoming Mac keys. Yes. Yeah complete in the current topic. You it was a complete. Okay. See it's like
By doing this yeah lunch more to make it public and more to make it worth doing it
Then you'd have to give them further like there if this habit there are tons
You
For a second that in sat down and said hey if we give you a whack ton of money will you
Like that's really the way it works. It was like
Hey, we want to offer you this, you know MDF program
marketed market development funds
In order to promote in video products and you know help us to communicate the value of Nvidia to gamers
Quite frankly a lot of time is very I mean Nvidia car will offer compelling value to game do so
there's a lot on the
Deceptive saying that there's all on the handy side, especially in just game Intel has a lot of
In fun in order to communicate that because Intel doesn't have reach to every user who could use a CPU
They don't communicate directly. They need someone like that to have you know Intel inside stickers on those laps
You know, they need that messaging and that's where money changes hand
So it's not like this is completely unprecedented a manufacturer giving money to someone who sells their products to sell them better
the problem here the way that it's
very awkwardly
denied and awkwardly made very public and
I'm actually gonna go against you more aggressive than that because they completely dropped the line
Well, yeah, and they didn't and they didn't come up a line as in okay
Hold on because not selling not having AMD CPUs
Of the MDC and that is part of the problem. That's
where I was just going so like not having systems that have them and just
Like okay. Well, we have a strategic partnership with are we gonna say that EVGA is anti-competitive because they don't sell
In video graphics cards, well, they just have strategic ships the problem is the publicity and denouncing
You say they suck because of X that's denouncing. That's a problem. Yes saying
Saying we choose
I did articles. So apparently the the program is allegedly called tier zero and
I
Think there was on this article at some point that basically said the program is dead. So the program that the program is
there
Wasn't a good idea to keep and I tend to agree with it
Speaking of Nvidia initiatives
I'm looking for the amazing. No what I'm looking for
There get their game box thing, whatever it's called
Not called Nvidia box war box war box, I think that's what it's called. There's something Nvidia is doing lately that actually cool they're selling
I'm just gonna be telling so there's a box out of box
4k certified gaming through selected partners. I think that's right and it's not just through Jen. It's through other
See makers as well. And the idea is just these are powerful enough for 4k gaming
I don't know what they're getting into without necessarily all the specs and a lot of people I
saw
To be completely honest, they're not targeting you guys they're targeting the people that are gonna
You
EP you
posted on the forum in response to one of the things we were talking about last week
GK 110 was never meant to be used in a GTX 680 like product
So this post ham is in direct response in which etc. And you guys can go ahead and check it out. Definitely
Always post the the document on the Linus tech tips forum
So at him it has all this cash it has compute accelerators it has this it has that
Compete with AMD's consumer Radeon line in 2012. It couldn't be low. It was impossible per calculated
All that's finding good that doesn't mean it was never intended to compete so the keyword
Do it that doesn't mean it was never
To be a G. In fact, we see it's a G
If they could have achieved those then would they have done it?
Maybe maybe not because they certainly do and they were better off shipping much more lucrative Tesla's
Things number one is one of the points in this post is because it's more of a compute or design
It was therefore not for gaming GTX 480
If it ends in an 80 compute
oriented
GTX for
It's card we have not yet seen a GPU from in that has not made its way into a
Graphics card at some point if they could think great number two was that they needed all for super for this
supercomputer, okay
It doesn't that's that doesn't mean that they never intended anything brings thing again if they had more you feel to easily do that
And do something
Okay, so furthermore gk1
action, correct capabilities safer for workloads that rely on ECC
Okay. Well, I mean they were moving towards more Tesla and more quality
Anyway, that's a new thing. That's not a that's not a new for them. That's not something that they weren't already
I'll before this
Stop. Okay. The first gk1 10 based consumer product launch was gtx Titan. That's 13 months after
It's the 7970. So even if Nvidia had intended to use gk, it would have come up more than
Well, okay, which is exactly why they're really lucky 7970 wasn't a lot
Time again
GTX for me that Nvidia would have been late on a product launch with a part that wasn't early, you know trimmed
And optimized for gaming and that doesn't mean they never ended for gtx 480
Hard that doesn't mean they never intended gk 110 to be a G
They've got the yields now where they're delivering
99 card gtx be
Which is like look at the way their product stack
Well
King gk10 fit everything from the 499 price band all the way to 49 price band
Done that before that's never
Strategy and you can quote me on it will never intentionally be part of their strength and to position a mid-range
intended GPU against a top-tier GPU
That is the direction that they moved in as long as
Happened but that doesn't make a 110 was never intended to be geforce, which is the okay
Okay, and the headline was to be used in a gtx 60 product like I don't necessarily believe that either
So anyway, there you go. I mean, I think
The k-104 first and it's great that they were be able to avoid the bloodbath they would have taken on selling these cards
But again, it's not like they've never taken a bloodbath on a top-tier product before it's not like
They've never launched a vape product before six
It's not like a top-tier product has never
That's my take on it maybe
Maybe somewhere in a back room it from day one gx and was not intended to be
Part of that family as the top-tier product. I doubt it
We've we've got a few
If you think so, let's jump to a thing you might not be so let's go down to the gold
Are you sure we can't see let's see round
Later
HTC introduced
HTC one this was posted by top war gamer on the forum and I want one
I think they made like five though, so I don't think I'm getting one
But then but then yeah, so you can so it costs roughly
4,000 like that, but the the verge had a group
Had a great thing about up here as well. And that is that you can already get gold plate
Gold plated phones from gold genie calm anyway, so I don't have an affiliate program with gold genie calm
They have not given us any money for a sponsor spot here. So
Don't take this for anything that it isn't but holy balls. That is so cool
Game console
We
Golden we
Golden we yep
We got it
iPhone 5 iPhone 5FS. I mean, this is this is
Cool, and I think that's I'm sure if you contacted them
You could get pretty much whatever you wanted gold plated considering their selection that they have. It's awesome
My good everything we have left. I'm gonna end up ranting about I know I think
At least like a little bit of a between the ranting. All right. Well, we're up again and video limit. There's two three
after in video again
You
In video edition by Jeremy
So basically what in video I've taken a limitation that already and they have
unnaturally
Injected it in
their
Their Linux drivers in order to not be showing preferential treatment to the Linux platform versus Windows because they only support three
Monitors on Windows specific quote for feature parity between Windows and Linux based mosaic to
greens like but oh
My I don't want to show preference. You hated Linux forever gave them thing screw you
Ah
I just
It actually because when with Linus Torvalds was like I'm not gonna take my finger away yet. I was like, oh
That's not to say Andy's perfect either so AMD's got a bit of a weird thing going on here
We're there in order to get
HDMI audio carried over the DVI port so using a DVI to HDMI
You
And that's not because there's something complicated remember guys DVI to HDMI adapters are
Adapters not signal it. There's no logic built into them. It's pin to pin
which means that the
That they are they are pinning the audio out by king for for a module that's inside the adapter before it
In
I would love to have to give it to it, but it's just I don't know
I mean, it's not like, you know Nvidia
So they're you know, they would be prevented
Why
You
Things on and off, I mean again AMD's guilty of this to 790 I actually asked this in my briefing
You know support is 77 you're gonna get true audio support and they kind of went
You
The hardware is there it
firmware update
It's a rebrand. Yeah, so
They could in theory enable it
But I I suspect they won't and much the same way that Intel never enabled trim on their x25 M's
I mean, I'm not trying to pick on anybody here. I'm just saying I don't like this practice
It makes me really uncomfortable and it's like everywhere and I mean, okay, I'll give AMD this though
At least they're allowing cross-generate fire so far
Someone tried 79 70 I think X with r9
well people had some
They're literally rebranded
Nvidia has never allowed that in the past. Yes, that's why
When the last one the rebranded was and I think
8800 GTS
To
250
Thing like that 88. No 9800 GTX plus
T-okay, I think I think that was the most recent one they did and they did not allow cross-platform SLI in term
In spite of the fact that they were the same
So at least Andy's allowing that however, I don't know how long they're gonna keep doing that because part of our trouble. I mean is
You
Correct about it and they've controlled the plan very carefully. Is that part of microstutter? I don't know
Because then if you had to same it wouldn't be there
What wouldn't be there
Yeah, so like I mean cuz 79 50's fire with 79 70
For example, if you have two different GPUs that can't even perform the same calculations at the same rate, then I could see you
You
Nicole user where you can all because this one's exactly the same as that. Yeah
You
Of that but I think in terms of
If that ends up being a problem point mix to GPU crossfire
Maybe they will have to simplify and just say same GPU same family go so
I mean, I guess this is an opportunity to discuss reach general. Maybe we should save it for next
Week mass transit directions have been added
Which I think is is phenomenal so you better not post it on the forum the original article is from Engadget
I think this is one of the most useful things there could be about Google Glass between
helping me get to where I need to go and
Being mounted to my head and telling me who people are that I meet because I'm not very good with names and faces I would
Pay $1,000 for a Google has that functionality and reasonable right now
There you go
Well, I don't have $1,000 but it's also not available right now, I think transit sometimes in Hawaii
Well, I don't think you'd spend $1,000 on that you never take transit I spent $1,000
You know, never mind transit just in general having directions. I mean
like mounted to my dash a covers and
be
At least the speedometer in my car
Samsung's curved smartphone gets pictured in leak and confirmed
So there's some good disappointed by you better not on the forum and there's some good points from that Norwegian guy
You want to go ahead and feel these?
Okay
So here let's see if we can there's a picture. So that's what it looks like. It's curved
My favorite that Norwegian guy brought up would be the curved screen screen. We make it better at Falls. Yeah
Okay, maybe less likely to get damaged. Sure
the
I certainly know if I agree with because some people are different sizes and that
Yeah, so he said it'll it'll be better for putting it in your pocket. I tend to disagree with that because
Usually put my phone in screen away from my body
If you don't have your phone completely powered off so I yeah also if I have other things my pocket
I usually make it screen away and then put everything
Make track here and I one thing that I but I don't think is in here
But easier for people smaller hands to reach that top left corner
No, I think that's in there thing flat rest more comfortably and secure in your hand could be a problem for people with small hands
Yeah, so so better better reach more comfortable
Laying it down on your nightstand to wake it up the time you focus towards your ear making it to you
I don't know. That's there's be good. I guess. Yeah, that's true
There's some functionality of if it's laying on a table if you pull down on the white it'll show you any notifications you have
I'm in the battery. Okay. So here's my problem. Okay, watch this
Boom
Okay, now what
Now I got this like weird curved screen that doesn't fit any better in my hands and I don't think that curved
It's pretty curved. Let's go back. I think it's so curved that it's gonna be unusable. I don't know
What's ridiculous to me? And the other thing that bothers me about it is the whole curved screen thing from an eye fatigue perspective is
Is supposed to be better because the screen is equitous from your eyes at all points and it's projecting light directly towards your eyes
But the issue for me with that then is again watching content sideways
Which is how I went at particularly when I'm like enjoy and on my phone is usually how I'm using
I
See it making it worse, I really I actually completely just I don't necessarily see it making it better
Really don't see it making it worse or I don't think it's curved that much
If you're looking at it
It's not like it's gonna be curved and you're looking up into an overhang that you can't see
Like you're gonna be able to see the whole screen. I'm no
Screen, it's just I think it'll look distorted
No
Because that's what causes a movie theaters not appear to be curved
it makes it appear to be a in front of you is the
If you're just green and turn it on Ted and then okay wait and see I go yeah
By that phone I'm just saying I don't
I
Topic
So Samsung has not only allowed carriers to lock the note 3 to their networks
but they have actually locked it down region wise which flies in the face to me of
the direction that the industry should be going and
Starkly with
I was doing enabling
roaming on their network with a reasonable cost as a pen then Samsung's turning around and making it so the phones can't be
Can't be unlocked in particular. Oh, I
Okay. So yes a t-mobile customer can still take their note 3 with them when they're traveling to be very clear. But what Sam's
gray market
So, you know the sale of unlocked phones will be will be very region specific and you will be limited to getting a phone from
your carrier and if every
Progressive thinking and allow I unlock phones without contract
All that kind of stuff then something like that would be fine
But otherwise, I think people are gonna end up in a situation where they can't get a note 3 for them without signing along
me again the direction
to be becoming more
global and less
locked down and
this to me is just
right way to go about this I
Like I even had I read originally that is region locked and then
After read that once you put an initial sim in yeah that you could change it
But then if it's being locked hardcore in multiple ways once you put that sim in you're gonna be screwed. Yep
So more of more lock
On that post on a non tech about voting with your wallet not being
You
In relation to this and I agree I think voting with incredibly important the I that one voice doesn't count
Something that's money that you
Directly away from their potential rabbit gave it to a competitor a large
Probably what I typed and it wasn't to do the same thing. I know you vote with your I also vote with my wallet
and I do agree that the one person thing is
Ridiculous because the one thing isn't actually a one person. It's hopefully everyone is doing it bundles a much larger
It makes it much bigger situation
Like I don't think the scope will hit enough people to make the people will never know
Yeah, I mean Samsung's not doing the same thing on other
There's still lots of alternatives within Samsung's own lineup that people can buy
yeah, and another thing that I
hope that I
Within the article there probably won't but if we talk about it, we'll talk about it and everyone starts talking everyone
Once it gets big enough
That one article I don't necessarily think it would have been enough people I
Have no idea what that's doing in there
All right. Do you want to do the the forum update while I fire up the builds of the week?
I think that got moved does somewhere else anyway
For folding is now 76 we got we went up 10 spots from last week, which is ridiculous
I believe we're currently the fastest moving team in the world. We have
1101 members right now we gained 63 from last year
We 4p folding member
Imaginarium I believe is his name. So so we know crazy
Or processors redoing the one from last week because so many people didn't get it
Yeah, so that's actually pretty awesome our boy team is 11th in Canada
10th in the world so quite as well, but it's still really well. They went up 22 spots worldwide. It's last week
So that's actually pretty all they have 123 members. All right
Build logs of the week guys
Arctic water by be negative go. So this is actually the same machine
We did last week just because this we cut off and it's at the very end
We felt or I felt at least that a lot of people might have missed it and I didn't want these guys to lose their
Spotlight so we're doing it again. So this machine is just absolutely insane
There's a lot of raw copper, which I'm sure he coated so that wouldn't get all messed up
But like you can actually see these painted things specifically
Parts on the saber-tooth motherboard and the tops of his RAM and that little mesh bit right there
All this kind of stuff and he actually opted to go with the the default crossfire bridge
Which like no one likes showing because it's usually ugly but actually fits in this build
And just it's just absolutely beautiful. So that's built by be negative. He's actually quite well known
All right, custom water cool desk by P bain. So an absolutely beautiful build
Just looks incredible and like the amount of attention
To both of these was crazy
Like it wasn't quite exactly the kind of orange that I would
And something that I was worried about with this is these these kind of taller desks not like actually in height but
Where you put things on?
But it kind of fits him and he did as you can see it kind of well and he did say
Of his insanely
Scary for bad internet build log because he has so many high-res pictures that he's thinking about putting a little table
Extension thing for his mouse anyways, that's cool. Yeah, I really like how he did like the
Controllers there that's on the side and everything. It's really
So this is something kind of interesting that most people won't have seen yet because rolling it yet
But some of those of the week of the path are actually featured in an upcoming
videos
There actually featured the individual build logs
so I was told about what we wanted to do for their q4 campaign and
Josh was like I could do this or we could do that and I was like
Here yeah, why don't we why don't we feature a product?
I
Don't we feature it in such a way that you know
Cuz I'm not gonna say that the define r4 is my favorite case. I'm not gonna see that even if it's
Because it's not great case. It's a great. It's a great case. But the tjo7 is my favorite case
Stone I'll take that money now
But I wanted to say about it is well, let's say something about the define r4 that's
Or build logs of the week on the land show than any other case and I went checked and it is so all actually contains
Define our four cases in all their glory cycling through it and then finishing with a nice shot of the diff
And it's just like look here's a message
In our four guys do we do it was kind of a neat way to
To promote that's really cool because you had actually come to me asking what things have been featured both
During the individual builds and there
They're called out so there's pictures old some Edsel picked kind of top picture of each build and then put
And a lot of whoever built it nice which I think is gonna be cut
Most to see that so so there you go guys actually pretty awesome. I think that's pretty much it for the land show this week
Thank you so much for tuning in guys. We are
Making the time out of your busy life to tune in and listen to us talk about
Hope you enjoyed our special little biscuit and our hat
Went along with them yours went flying
I think we're gonna go let us know if you think we should wear these hats every
