Alright, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the WAN Show.
Start your coolers.
Start your engines running.
No motor is usually the...
Get your motor running.
We get your motor running.
We crank your engine.
Crank engine could kind of work.
We plug your tailpipe, if you know what I mean.
Anyways, we have topics this week that aren't about cranking engines.
The first one is WD acquires...
What about tailpipes?
WD does not acquire tailpipes.
WD acquired SanDisk for 19 billion dollars.
Yeah, they stuffed 19 billion up their tailpipe.
And that made them theirs.
Prison rules, man.
Oh my god.
Also, YouTube did something with red.
Yeah, YouTube Red.
It's different than YouTube Blue.
It's less sad.
Oh, I feel bad for YouTube Blue now.
Yo, listen up.
Here's the story about a little guy that lived in the red world.
And he paid for YouTube and got some cool stuff.
Except people don't like it.
But we'll talk about that later, sorry.
Korean 10TB PCIe and 8TB SATA drives.
Also, the USA is enforcing mandatory drone registration.
Well, trying to.
More on that in a minute.
Every time I say more on, I'm like, that must be a stupid news topic.
And intro.
Maybe that's the person's last name.
More on that in a minute.
And for cool FreshBooks stuff.
And dollarshaveclub.com slash Linus for cool dollar stuff.
Sorry, shaving, shaving.
That's what it is, shaving.
And butt wiping.
Okay, and then I'm going to put this here.
See how I blanked it?
Now it'll load right away next time.
Should you put the MP4 at the top?
No, I did.
I did because that's the end screen of the intro MP4.
But we always forget to do that.
Well, technically, I'm not the one that's in control.
Yeah, technically, maybe if you would actually tailpipe something.
I don't know where I'm going with this.
So we've got a great show for you guys today.
We've got a ton of topics, some of which are interesting, some of which are total shite.
But we won't talk about those ones for too long.
And I'm getting an ad for, wow, Scouts versus Zombies, that can't be good.
Oh, this looks like one of those terrible joke movies.
Yeah, Scouts guide to the zombie apocalypse.
Wow, that looks awful.
Sorry, a bunch of people in chat were saying that they have no video feed.
Refresh.
Refresh the page.
Everything is good.
I was just making sure it's working.
I've got a lot of people talking about Star Wars trailer hype.
I have not seen it.
What?
No, no, no.
There's a reason.
Okay.
I have a policy.
I don't read the back of books.
Okay.
I do not watch trailers.
Okay.
That's very fair.
That is my policy because I take spoiler alerts to, like, I have no idea.
You just baited everyone.
Don't read the chat today.
Well, you can't spoil a movie that's, and there were no plot points.
I've talked to Brandon about it already.
I've talked to Brandon, which is all I need to know.
Brandon says the trailer was flipping awesome.
I think there were minor plot points.
Okay.
Well, either way, I will ignore it because I know that the chat is going to be half full
of people trolling anyway.
Okay.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So it's fine.
It's fine.
You just won't believe it.
The Twitch chat will literally cancel itself out.
Yes.
In this case.
It does in most cases.
One type of troll working against the other type of troll, effectively trolling each other.
So anyway, I have not watched it because like even Game of Thrones, I have literally no
idea what happens after the first book because I am determined to wait until either all the
books are out or George RR Martin dies.
At which point I will read all the books that are available and then I will watch the entire
show and I will binge watch it.
And that will be funny because that's exactly my plan.
That will be exactly how it's going to go to.
So I take this whole thing very seriously.
I don't even, I watched the first force awakens trailer.
I let myself have that.
I watched it.
I kind of went, yeah, those are X wings.
Those are lightsabers.
This movie cannot be bad.
Oh, it's Jar Jar Binks.
No, no, he's not there.
That's good.
Um, so I am going to, uh, so I'm going to wait, I'm going to wait.
So people were asking for impressions.
My impressions are that I am cautiously optimistic that Abrams is not going to do anything to
my tailpipe with the new star Wars movie.
And you know, it's funny.
I was looking at top that he will in just the right way.
Yeah.
In just the right way.
And he'll look me in the eye.
Um, so I was looking at top grossing movies of all time.
And you know, what's funny is even corrected for today.
Star Wars is not that competitive.
Like it's good.
It's good to be clear.
It's good.
Um, yeah.
Cause like you correct for inflation.
So yeah, but that's not fair because population increases.
That's true.
Who would be able to go to the movie also increases.
But if anything, that's advantage modern movies.
So like gone.
Yeah.
Gone with the wind is still the number one grossing movie of all time.
Corrected for inflation.
So, uh, here, let's, let's just bring it up.
It's top grossing movies of all time.
There's like a Wikipedia article, which hopefully is somewhat that somewhat accurate.
It's purple.
I was just looking at it.
Um, so yeah, when you, when you actually look at it, avatar crushes everything by long shot
followed by Titanic, Jurassic world is number three.
What?
What?
I had no idea Jurassic world performed that well, uh, beat Avengers.
Like really?
Like I didn't know that Jurassic park as a, as a franchise had here, I'll, I'll, I'll
screen share with you.
Did you see Jurassic world?
I haven't.
I want to, I heard it wasn't that great.
I didn't think it was very good.
I thought the only good thing about it was the one dude that I can't really name right
now.
I'm terrible with actor names.
Yeah, we know.
If we ever make a show about movies, don't bring me out.
Yeah.
You're not invited.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, but yeah.
So they got a fairly good comments, but I wouldn't know who anyone is.
And that would be kind of weird.
But like looking, looking at this, I kind of go, you know, you compare Marvel, right?
Like Marvel comics and the reach that something like that has compared to the reach of the
star Wars universe.
And I would have expected even the crappy star Wars movies to perform relatively better
than that compared to like all the Avengers and all these iron man three are all these
Marvel movies.
Like this is, this is the top star Wars movie.
I'm surprised parts of the Caribbean stranger tides did more than like toy story three iron
man.
Let's look at the correct one.
So here's the corrected one.
So star Wars itself, the first movie actually compares very favorably, but the other movies
actually were nothing special and Phantom menace is probably the most telling one.
So star Wars fans are fans of star Wars kind of regardless of whether they go see the movie
or even a fan of the movie, I guess was my realization like star Wars is so much more
than the movie.
So I'm not even sure if this movie being amazing or being a total flop will actually impact
anything about the star Wars universe and its success as a franchise.
Cause you could argue star Wars is the most recognizable brand that came from a movie
ever.
That came from a movie.
Yes.
Didn't the books originate?
No, no, no.
Star Wars, star Wars, the a new hope was the first star Wars thing.
Okay.
And yet they actually, you know, compared to, especially in recent times, like in, in
the generation that, you know, I grew up in, haven't really performed that well at the
box office.
I mean, I'm not saying a billion dollars is anything to sniff out.
I'm just saying that for what an international phenomenon star Wars is, I just would have
expected it to, to outperform pirates of the Caribbean.
You know, there's a fair amount of people saying like random things in chat, like Harry
Potter.
I saw a couple of times more than one person that's from a book for sure.
Yes.
Yeah.
Like Frozen did 1.279 billion.
I'm kind of looking at this going really, really like, I mean, yeah, it was a good movie.
I saw it, but like, I know a lot of people saw frozen.
I get it appealed to all ages, let it go and all that noise.
But I just, if you compare the, the fleetingness of what frozen's impact will be on, on popular
culture, like, yes, it will, it's heavily, it's highly impactful now.
And if they do a sequel, then it will, it will get some more momentum.
But you compare that to what star Wars has done over the last, what would it 77 global
warming's effect 40 years frozen franchise.
Yeah, I think that's been done with ice age.
So you know, we're, we're like the planet heating up effects.
No, I mean, like it'll be kind of like, not really a thing at one point, it'll be like,
cause it's based in, where's it based in?
Queen Elsa is going to combat the, oh, I don't know.
It's based in like an actual, like the, and the, the Kings that visit and stuff are from
like actual places.
Oh, I did not know that.
Yeah.
It's I read something about it.
So like maybe a somewhere I think, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So like those places might not be frozen at some point.
No, but I thought it's like her power that made it frozen or some crap.
Oh, so that it won't matter.
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay.
So you're bad at actors and movie plots.
Well, no, cause they're from a place that was like when, when she's a kid, they're like
pulling ice out of the lake.
Okay.
Tell me this.
Indiana Jones carries a whip or a crowbar.
A whip.
Okay.
Just making sure, because I don't know, you might've had them confused with Gordon Freeman
at this point.
Cause they're cutting ice out of the lake to take back for like cooling stuff down.
Like they're in a very cold area.
Right.
But that's cause they don't.
Her power is also freezing things.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
All right.
Oh no.
Our polar bears will have nowhere to go.
People are like, Luke, just stop.
What?
I wasn't even wrong.
Apparently it is Norway.
So it's very cold there.
Oh, that's good.
Okay.
You should just stop.
You should just stop.
We should both just stop.
That's it for the show.
Thanks.
We're done.
Thanks for tuning into movie chat Friday.
We will see you guys next time.
All right.
Why don't we do an actual topic here?
Um, the U S is planning to enforce mandatory drone registration with the transportation
department by Christmas.
They are taking this ball and running with it.
This is wait, how, this is a stupid, stupid article.
How does Apple owing a bunch of money for patent violation have anything to do with
drone registry?
Way to go stuff.tv.
You don't even know what your article is about.
This is like a two line.
I'm going to go to NBC news.com and I'm going to link people to that.
Yeah.
Link people to that.
So let's go ahead.
So according to NBC news, the U S federal government plans to require all flying drones
to be registered with the U S department of transportation by Christmas.
And basically this will, what's up?
Oh, is the NBC site just down?
Oh, no fan.
Maybe us news.com anyway.
So they're going to be working with the drone manufacturers to put a system in place that,
and with retailers, presumably that at the time of purchase will require people to register
that drone.
So there's going to be a lot of issues.
Obviously the system is not going to be perfect immediately and people are going to find a
way around it.
And there's, there's no clear system in place for what happens to all the drones that are
out there today.
What happens to hobbyist Jones say, what if you build your own, I mean, maybe they would
make you register the chassis, but you could build your own mode, but then who cares?
Maybe it would be the controller board or something like that.
Like if you could get the, you can make like a, uh, almost just set a name of a model in
our forum.
So I think you can get, uh, like raspberry pie or yeah, yeah, you, you can.
So, so it's, it's not really clear to me how they would regulate these, these custom drones.
But the point is that, um, I'm a feeling this is going to be kinda sorta like this is going
to get a little bit controversial, but I think it's, I have a feeling it's gonna be kinda
sorta like gun laws, but even easier to get around where like the gangsters aren't going
to care.
Like the people that are going to do something illegal with it, aren't going to care and
they're going to just go around it and then it's just going to be annoying for the people
that try to use it properly.
Yeah.
So they're apparently trying to take public feedback, um, into account as the, as the
rules are formed.
Uh, but there's, there's a lot of, there's a lot of questions.
Will there be a registration fee?
Uh, should certain drones be exempt from registration?
What constitutes a drone?
You know, are, are we, are we talking like this thing now?
I mean, I think there, there are some guidelines with respect to the functionality of them,
but I mean, it's not like in the next five years you wouldn't expect to be able to buy
micro drones that can mostly pilot themselves that have a first person view cameras and
as the electronics get smaller and cheaper, so, so, so would I have to register this thing?
I mean, if that got, if you know, like a parrot mini drone gets sucked into a jet turbine,
it's going to disintegrate.
It's not gonna, yeah, um, and it obviously can't fly that high.
So this all comes on the, on the heels of what a huge number of obvious violations of
the existing laws where people are flying them next to airports, flying them next to
forest fires, uh, flying them around in the city at night when, you know, if it fell out
of the air for whatever reason, let's face it, flyaway drones are a thing where if it
fell out of the air, it could hit someone's dog or a child or, um, you know, yeah, otherwise
cause a problem.
Yep.
Yeah.
So the consumer electronics association predicts something to the tune of 700,000 drones will
be sold this holiday season.
So that's all, that's a lot of potential potential hazards flying around in the air.
I can understand why they're doing it.
I can understand why drone enthusiasts are mad, but most of the reasonable drone enthusiasts
that I've either talked to or seen posting online are directing their hate at the people
who are just screwing around with them, doing particularly stupid things because let's face
it, the laws in Canada are kind of dumb.
Like you literally cannot fly a drone pretty much anywhere in a, in a city because you,
you can't be within, I forget what it is.
I think it's like a hundred meters of an animal or person and it's just like, okay, uh, you
can't be, I forget what the rules are with respect.
I think you're not allowed to be in a park.
You're not allowed to this.
You're not allowed to that.
Like there's all this stuff.
You can't be within a certain amount of animals or people, but then you also can't go to a
park.
So you just can't go to anywhere.
Right.
So it was basically, it pretty much is like, yeah, you can't fly them.
Um, so I'm just like, okay.
But no one was really enforcing that until people started doing really, really stupid
stuff with them.
So that's, that's basically, that's basically where we're at on that.
This is kind of a big deal.
Our original article here is from overclock3d.net let's go ahead and pull that up.
That WD has been confirmed to be in the process of acquiring SanDisk for $19 billion.
So for those of you who are not familiar with Western Digital, they make hard drives.
For those of you not familiar with SanDisk, they make flash products.
So you know, the SD cards, compact flashcards, oh SSDs as well.
Basically what Western Digital is seeking to do here should be fairly obvious.
They are trying to gain actual manufacturing capacity for solid state products because
they've dabbled before.
WD has had hybrid drives, for example, they had that, um, that black squared product that
actually had like a 128 gig SSD and a hard drive and they were like in one and it was
like kind of a bizarre product.
But unless you own manufacturing capabilities, you're always going to be paying someone else
to manufacture the flashchips for you.
So you're never going to be price competitive in a commodity market like storage.
So Western Digital basically went, okay, let's bite the bullet.
Now's the time we're going to go ahead, we're going to acquire someone with actual fab capacity
and they bought SanDisk for $19 billion.
Now it is contingent on Western Digital is getting something to the tune of, I think
$3 billion in funding for X percentage of their company from some capital firm, something,
something.
So, so there's actually two different proposed prices.
One if that deal goes through, which will be sometime, I think second half of 2016 and
then there's this price and then there's another price if it doesn't go through, which it is
expected that SanDisk would reject if that were the case.
So WD is not putting themselves in a bind where they might not actually have the cash
to do this when the time comes, which is pretty smart, but it looks like if all goes according
to plan, WD will have the entire gamut covered.
Pure SSD.
It says now it's official.
It's official that the, that the deal which is contingent upon those conditions is in
place.
Okay.
Yeah.
So the, like the, the actual shares in cash have not actually changed hands yet.
So this will allow Western Digital to bring hard drives, SSDs and hybrid products to market
with bare cost costs on both of them.
The only thing that WD would then be missing is actual, actual like not, cause they can
manufacture the chips themselves so they wouldn't actually be developing NAND flash technology
like someone like a Micron Intel with their joint venture or like someone like a Samsung
is doing.
So, so there you go.
This is really interesting.
Like one of the notes says in the doc, this is combining two massive storage providers
and like WD as everyone knows are legendary in terms of hard drives and then SanDisk is
huge actually in terms of like camera storage too, SD cards.
Very well respected.
Both are very well respected for their quality and the longevity of their products.
So this is a pretty huge merger actually.
Yep.
SanDisk has been working very closely with Toshiba, another actual NAND technology company.
And the only statement that I've seen about that so far is that that will continue.
So yeah, what a, what a, what a situation for someone like a Seagate out there kind
of looking at this going, okay, well that leaves us not a whole, cause there are not
a lot of companies that actually manufacture flash chips, like very few, very few companies
own fabs and now WED does.
And a lot of them are in partnerships and stuff already.
Yep.
So best of luck to, best of luck to Seagate and yeah.
I'll be interested to see how they tackle this.
Ah, here, this is interesting.
YouTube Red.
So why don't we, why don't we jump right into this?
The original article here is from Recode.
YouTube will make you pay to see some of its new videos, which is actually and like a lot
of people's coverage of this topic, actually a little misleading.
They are not going to be necessarily YouTube's videos.
I am aware that there are some creators, we are not among them, there are some creators
out there that have been approached to do exclusive like, like YouTube originals content,
but it's not a hundred percent clear to me that YouTube would own those videos and it's
also not a hundred percent clear what would happen to that content in the very long term.
It's possible that like our arrangement with Vessel where the content is behind a
paywall and then comes out onto the free platform later.
So it's not clear if it would be a similar arrangement or not.
But I do want to clear up some of the general misconceptions about YouTube Red because much
like our video where we announced that we were going to start launching our videos on
Vessel and in the first 30 seconds of that video I said we are not abandoning YouTube.
Half of the comments under the video, why are you, why are you staying on YouTube?
Why are you abandoning YouTube?
That was insane.
That was absolutely insane.
And it feels like from even some fairly large creators, I've seen some really ignorant statements
about this, like did you even bother to read the YouTube blog post?
Just read the blog post.
This is, this is very simple, okay?
If you're not being commissioned to make YouTube originals content, it's business as usual.
Everything is normal.
Everything is fine.
Everybody calm down.
Everything is changing.
Ad supported YouTube is not going anywhere.
And I doubt we'll ever go anywhere because ad supported is a legitimate model.
What YouTube's doing is they are adding a tier.
They're adding a premium service that exists on top of in addition to the, the ad supported
free model and what you get in return for a, I think it's a nine 99 subscription is
you get YouTube music, after one month free, you get YouTube music, which, and then you
get YouTube gaming, which YouTube gaming, I'm actually not 100% sure what the benefit
is of having a subscription, but you get YouTube music, which means that you can, you can listen
to music in the background, you can, you can download things.
So in, okay, so hold on, I'll stay focused on red anyway.
So YouTube music's not launched.
We'll talk about that later.
So YouTube Red allows you to save videos to watch offline and allows you to play back
in the background while you do other things without interruptions, both of which are very
cool features and they allow you to watch videos with no ads.
So what that means is your membership fee that you pay, and it's actually not a hundred
percent clear how much the split is.
So it looks like they're saying their quote is the vast, vast majority of revenue will
go to creators, but it's also been mentioned that creators would be paid the standard 55%.
And then, and then the way that it works is the money from your YouTube Red subscription
will be split among the creators that you watch according to watch time, which as we
know is YouTube's primary metric that they're looking for in terms of, of gauging the popularity
of a channel and the excellence of a video and all that kind of stuff.
Like a 24 hour random video, just so you can be like, I want to support this channel mainly
and just idle it when you're not there.
That's called gaming the system and we don't participate in that.
Our one and a half hour, our one and a half hour podcast notwithstanding.
So playlists.
Okay.
So there are a lot of questions here that do remain, even though the actual premise
of this is very simple.
No ads, being able to download videos officially and watch them later and being able to have
them continue to play back in the background.
All of which.
Download videos officially.
Yep.
And watch them later.
Yeah.
So through the app and you can choose just red content or of all YouTube content is red
content.
That's another thing.
A lot of creators are like super upset that I meant like red originals.
Oh yeah, no, nothing to do with red originals, all content.
So a lot of creators are upset that they're being forced into this agreement.
I don't really see why they care.
Why does it, why does it matter?
Nothing our audience at super doesn't matter cause they could just download the videos
anyways.
Yeah.
Changes probably know how to do that.
It changes nothing.
All it means is that instead of an AdSense revenue that you get for that view, you're
getting a red revenue split share.
And in theory, based on, based on, yeah, in theory it would be higher unless people are
very, very heavy consumers for their $10 a month, which they're not like, I've run the
numbers.
A view is worth a lot of money, like a single view.
So, and another thing too is some, some creators are, are, are upset.
Okay.
So first of all, why YouTube is forcing all creators into this is because that's the whole
service is YouTube without ads.
So yeah, you're going to need, as a creator, you're going to need to sign up and it's all
beneficial to you because people can either choose to pay or they cannot.
And then we've got creators that are kind of worried about, well, hold on a second.
That means that I'm not getting my ad revenue for that.
So then, but hold on.
What if I'm, Oh, hold on.
What if I'm in an area where YouTube red hasn't launched?
We're a perfect example.
YouTube red is launching in the U S exclusively for now.
So what if someone's a YouTube red subscriber and they watch our video, but we're not a
YouTube red creator, we're not getting a payout or are we?
So this is, this is all not very clear, but what I will say to the creators out there
and to the viewers out there is I wouldn't stress about it.
I really don't think this is a big deal.
I was looking at it last night and I was looking at it last night and only about a third of
our views in the last month on YouTube were monetized.
All of our videos have monetization enabled.
So whenever you click on our videos and there's no ad, that means that view was not monetized
or you have ad block.
So what that means to me is that even if, so, so 40% of our audience is in the U S so
it's, so even if a fraction of a fraction of our audience subscribes, there's plenty
of plenty of video views leftover for people who are not having views monetized, a lot
of people that help us in other ways, like the Amazon affiliate codes, like the shirts,
like the forum contributions.
But even without that, my point remains business as usual on both the creator side and on the
viewer side, you shouldn't care with the one exception being the YouTube original content.
But the cold hard truth there is that if YouTube is funding this content to be created and
it wouldn't have existed without it, then if you want it that badly, much like the Pewdie
pie game is a perfect example, do you think you should get that for free because you watch
him on YouTube or something?
Like if it's something that wouldn't have existed otherwise, then guess what?
You got to pay to play.
A lot of people have asked us what we have planned for YouTube red so far, nothing.
My YouTube contacts have not talked to me about it at all.
It's not being rolled out in Canada, so I can understand why they wouldn't have talked
to me at all.
We have committed many times to our viewers that our content will always be free.
It may be windowed release periods, it may be this, it may be that, whatever, but you
will always have access to all of our content for free.
So depending on the structure of the YouTube red paywall, we might do something with it,
but only if it would be a windowed release and we could release it to everyone eventually.
Right now, business as usual and if you don't like it, you probably misunderstood what it
was because it's nothing.
It makes no difference.
I plan to subscribe because I already subscribed to Google Play Music for eight bucks a month,
so it's another two dollars a month to not see ads on videos.
So yep, I'm going to do it, but...
Does it still have the family thing?
I'm not sure.
I'm not sure, but if it does, you can still be my family.
Sorry for people, a couple of people started mentioning I'm doing weird things with my
jaw and stuff.
It's definitely deaf in my left ear and it's actually very weird being on the show.
That's why I'm also doing this, looking behind his head so I can hear him with his ear.
Sorry.
We should have switched sides today.
I've got a lot of people asking what this means for Vessel, nothing.
Our Vessel contract is still very much in place, so our videos will be a week early
on Vessel and anything we were to do with YouTube Red would be within the confines of
our existing release schedule.
So if YouTube came to us and said something like, okay, we're going to do windowed release
for YouTube Red content, and I was kind of looking at it going, okay, so we'd have a
one week window on Vessel, another week window on Red, and I don't know if we're going to
do a two week release window here.
So we would probably not participate, at least until the landscape becomes more clear to
us in that case.
Right now as a creator everything is very up in the air.
Clear as mud, but it also totally doesn't matter because you can completely ignore it
and everything will be the same.
Which is fine.
If you don't want ads and you want YouTube music and stuff, sure, if not, don't worry
about it.
Yeah, I'm totally going for it as soon as it's available and super stoked.
Are we that deep into the show already?
It's 5.20.
How is it 5.20?
5.20!
Why don't we do this next thing real quick then?
Sure.
Large esports, max, max, match fixing.
Match fixing.
Thank you.
Revealed in Korea, one coach and two players arrested.
So basically, I'm going to get a link going fairly soon, but if Linus could take over
because I'm currently posting a link.
Why is there an NCIX ad on teamliquid.net?
That's awesome.
Yeah, I can buy, oh, this must be like a Google ad or something.
I was looking at Server Essentials R2 last night.
Mine was TD.
Isn't TD a Canadian bank?
Yeah.
Yeah, it's localized.
Toronto Dominion.
So prime Starcraft 2 head coach, Gerard, and programmers, Yoda, and...
Whoa.
I bought this last night.
Yeah.
I didn't know that...
I looked for a camera once on one website, and every website I went to that had Google
ads after that had this kind of stuff.
No, but I didn't know NCIX was this clever.
I didn't know they targeted ads like that.
Back when I worked there, we didn't log what people were viewing and then hit them with
ads about it.
So this is...
Anyway.
I wonder if Google has a tool or something.
That seems likely.
Yeah.
All right.
Sorry.
Yeah.
I don't...
Did I say programmers?
I meant pro gamers.
My bad.
Yoda and Bongbong, there's two Bs on Bongbong, I hope I'm saying Bongbong correctly, have
been arrested in connection with match fixing in Korea.
Sorry?
Boom?
Bee-boom?
Bee-boom?
Anyway.
Yeah, sorry.
I'm not familiar with this particular gamer.
Where was I again?
12 individuals have been arrested in total, including financial backers and a journalist
who acted as a broker.
Two of the financial backers were ex-gangsters who provided the funds for betting to occur
on illegal websites.
Five matches were found to have been fixed.
I think it was around like nine grand.
Yeah.
US.
Yeah.
Gerard was charged with receiving an equivalent of about 9,000 USD.
All these figures are apparently approximate.
And Yoda, to intentionally lose a match in GSL season one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So there you go.
So basically, they're going to jail, and they've been banned for life from the Korean
Esports Association, and KESPA, I don't know if we call it that but I don't care,
has said that even if the criminal suit, even if the criminal charges don't end up putting
these guys in jail or anything like that, they're still going to be pursuing a civil
case against them.
Yeah, basically, they're taking it very seriously and so they should.
This kind of stuff is total crap and undermines all the efforts of everyone else in esports
elsewhere.
The fight to make esports as legit as possible has been huge.
And crap like this continuing to happen is just hard.
And yes, we know, it happens in every sport, I get it, but they're currently going through
growing pains and it makes it that much worse.
Yup.
I'm going to turn down our saturation a little bit, that's the one complaining we're
too saturated.
All right, so what else we got?
This is just a quick one, but here we go, AkibaPC.watch.impress.co.jp is our source
for this one, this is great.
So pretty much we've got confirmation that there's an 8 terabyte SATA SSD in the making
right now with a 10 terabyte PCI express SSD also in the making right now.
This website is amazing.
I know, right?
Oh my god.
PC hotline.
Man, that's great.
Oh my goodness.
We're probably the only visitor on this site right now.
Look at how far it goes down when there's no content left.
It just keeps going.
There we go.
Okay, so here we go.
That's the site.
And it's over.
And it's finally done.
And a banner ad.
I really hope these guys aren't paying too much for that banner ad placement.
Because that is terrible.
Oh, wreck.
So basically there's not too much to say about this other than that, as expected, SSD capacity
continues to rise.
This is a Korean company called Nova Chips that's working on them.
They're using a technology called Hyperlink NAND, so it's this daisy ring architecture
that outpaces the parallel bus architecture used in industry standard NAND flash products
apparently.
Yeah.
Point to point ring.
You can pre-order it today on oleospec.com in Japan, but you would basically be a complete
idiot if you were to do that because the pricing is about 10,400 US dollars for the 8 terabyte
SATA 3 SSD, and 15,600 US dollars for the 10 terabyte PCI Express SSD.
And they're not estimated to ship for another three to four months, depending on the SKU.
So given the volatility of flash pricing, I would probably just wait until it's on a
shelf.
Maybe it'll be $8,000.
Honestly, that's the conclusion of so many things these days, is just, just, just wait.
Just wait.
Honestly, at one point in time, pre-ordering games wasn't that bad.
Well, yeah, they only asked for like a retainer.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You just put your five bucks down and you could actually cancel your pre-order.
Yeah.
Now it's like, nope, nope, nope.
It's yours now.
We gave you early access.
It's yours.
Nope.
No question.
Buy the whole thing immediately.
Yeah.
And the season pass.
Buy the season pass too.
We'll give you like five bucks off.
Yeah.
What the hell is that?
Oh my God.
On that subject here, we've got a-
And like collector's editions not coming with season's passes?
Yeah, I know, right?
What?
It's like, well, we did give you like a sick, you know, metal tin.
Yeah, I was gonna say, it came with a metal tin case, collector's edition, limited edition,
oh damn.
You know what?
Everything is technically limited edition.
That's true.
There is not an unlimited amount of anything.
You're a limited edition.
So on that subject, it's unusual for a hardware maker to get involved in this kind of nonsense,
but Sapphire, maker of graphics cards, put an opinion piece on their blog about pre-ordering.
And you can obviously tell, based on the Assassin's Creed Unity screenshot that they got going
on at the top of the blog post here, that they're not in favor of pre-ordering.
But yeah, basically they're just like, yeah, blah, blah, blah, paid a test, it hurts the
whole industry.
Today you have to put all this money on the table.
That's really, I had no idea this was even in the doc.
50 DLCs of pre-ordering gray, that's kind of a cute sub-header there.
Yeah.
But yeah, there is, so basically the question at the end is this.
So there's nothing about the current pre-pay model that helps or is good for PC gamers
or I would say gamers at all.
How do we fix this?
It's easy.
Stop pre-ordering.
The group pre-order thing is so crap.
God, I hate that.
Tomb Raider did it too.
And they're just like, oh, the more people that pre-order, convince your friends.
No, shut up.
Don't convince your friends.
God.
It's like drug sales tactics.
It's like when- Get your friends hooked.
When the stupid elementary school is like, yeah, go to everyone's door in your neighborhood
and make them buy random crap.
Those assemblies, which should be straight up illegal.
God, those are bullshit.
I cannot believe at any level, sorry, this has always pissed me off, even when I was
a little kid.
I can't believe it's legal on any level to take everyone out of class, put them in an
assembly and give them a sales pitch that they have to push towards their parents so
they can win a stupid toy.
What the hell?
How?
How is this okay?
Okay.
Anyways.
Now in certain cases, it was used as a legitimate fundraiser for legitimate things that you
legitimate needed.
Also, also I won the five pound Hershey bar at my school one year.
So get wrecked.
You're probably just jelly.
I literally never did it.
You're literally just jelly.
And my parents, I don't even know if they would have stopped me or not, but I was like,
this is dumb.
Your parents are literally jelly.
I got a real job and I could have just bought the five pound chocolate bar.
You know how much chocolate I had?
Get wrecked.
I could have just bought it.
My dad made me share it with my class.
I was so mad, like beyond all mad.
I had to help cut it up into chunks to give to all my classmates.
I was like, I would rather just not eat it.
I would rather mount it to the wall forever.
That totally sounds like YouTube.
No, I won this.
Let me see if I can find the one.
Yeah, here.
There's a, I've got some pictures online.
So this is the one that I, this is the one that I, that I won.
Yeah.
One of those.
Yeah.
Here's the Hershey bar.
Apparently they're more common than I had thought.
You got lots of people.
Apparently there's a whole thing.
Oh, there's a whole thing of them.
Yep.
There you go.
Hershey five pound chocolate bar.
Everyone's excited.
I would have been excited too if I didn't have to share it.
Uh, what were we talking about?
We were talking about pre-ordering games.
We ended up there.
Um, speaking of pre-ordering, the HTC A9, um, okay.
What's their point?
I don't get it.
Oh, that was, this is so mean.
The verges, uh, the verges headline, how to copy that, that, uh, cleverly capitalized
the T which normally wouldn't be capitalized because of that campaign.
So the iPhone clone could be the one I'm waiting for.
Um, so basically it's kind of a mid tier spec phone.
It's got a Snapdragon 617, which is super not that exceptional.
Um, it's got a 1080p front facing camera, which is, which is kind of nice.
Um, I do support the better selfie camera thing.
Um, because yeah, for better or for worse, I do find myself taking them from time to
time.
My kids.
That's my excuse.
Okay.
Sorry.
Not, not, not, not caring about selfies, but what is, what is this?
I don't understand.
The HTC president says we're not copying Apple.
It's Apple that copies us.
What?
Oh, okay.
So that, that's a separate article.
We were going to discuss that later, but no, we can, we can tie that in here.
So I wanted to give a brief rundown of the phone.
It has kind of middling specs.
Um, it's good enough.
I comes in at a fairly reasonable price in the U S so it's a three 99 off contract.
Uh, it's not clear to me if this will be a carrier phone or not.
Um, not sure the very article doesn't cover it.
Um, but basically, yeah, it's got supposedly a really great headphone Jack.
So like a better deck.
That's actually something a lot of guys are talking about.
Uh, rumors about the galaxy S seven seemed to indicate that Samsung is putting a lot
of emphasis on, on better, better sound quality.
They're putting a really great deck in it.
Um, personally, I haven't really had an issue with anything from the past couple of generations
and I suspect most people don't either, but yeah, hey, we're gonna improve things now.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Where are you going to improve things?
Well, the battery.
Yeah.
Improve the battery.
Thank you.
Now.
I don't have to say it.
Um, well apparently HTC thought they could improve their phone by basically copying the
iPhone from pretty much every possible angle.
So this is again, the verge, like, Holy crap.
The only differences that I can see between this and an iPhone are that it says HTC on
the back, um, like there's more buttons on this side instead of that side.
And the camera bump is in the middle instead of there.
I mean, even looking at the bottom, there's, there's more pictures here.
Even looking at the bottom, it's like, wow, yep, yep.
That's that's a very similar thing that you're doing there.
Pretty crazy.
Hey, wow.
That's closer than I even thought.
And so, so in light of the accusations that HTC has copied Apple's industrial design,
HTC president has come out and said, we're not copying Apple.
It's Apple that copies us.
We can, this is, this is great.
We came up with the idea of putting an antenna band on the phone like this.
Apple copied that.
No, I don't think that's a design choice.
I think if Apple could avoid an antenna underwear line, they would probably do it.
Oh no, poor HTC, just so silly.
With that said, so, so this, this phone doesn't seem to, Oh, to be clear, the $399 pricing
is pre-order only.
So it's going to be going up to, I think $449, but don't quote me on that.
Basically, I see where they're going with this because while this phone is not really
capturing the hearts of enthusiasts, I was actually on the XDA developers podcast earlier
this week, which I don't know if they've posted yet because I should probably like pimp that
spot.
It was actually pretty good podcast.
I enjoyed it.
While it's not necessarily winning over like the tech heads, I can see this selling in
a store.
Like if I was shopping in a store and I didn't have enough money for an iPhone and this HTC,
one thing they have done well is the fit and finish of the phone.
So if they achieve that fit and finish and they compromise some specs to have it feel
really good in the hand, I think they could sell a ton of units.
I think there's potential there for that.
Yeah, I mean, I'm really disappointed that it has a really, really, really small battery.
It's a 21 something, 21 something notes.
It's about 2100 milliamp hours.
So HTC claims that the battery life with the phone is going to be very good, but my sort
of counter to that would be, well, you're running Android Marshmallow.
It will be one of the first phones with Android Marshmallow.
So you're running Android Marshmallow, which is probably where your power savings is coming
from.
So every other phone that actually also has a decent battery is also going to be running
Marshmallow assuming it gets the upgrade.
So this is a very apples to oranges comparison, or at least it would be if Android phones
ever got updates to a whole other conference.
Sorry, it's a 2150 milliamp hour battery.
I guess, I don't know, sponsor spots?
Yes.
Sure.
So sponsoring today's episode, we've got Dollar Shave Club, Dollar Dollar Shave Club,
Dollar Dollar Shave Club, Dollar Dollar Shave Club.
Do they have the jingle?
No, that wouldn't be it.
No.
No, it wouldn't.
But anyway, so the point of Dollar Shave Club is that if you want to shave your face, or
your legs, or your chest, or your arms, or your butt crack, whatever it is that you want
to shave, Dollar Shave Club has high quality razors and they ship them straight to your
door.
So if you're worried about going out in public with a hairy butt crack-
That could be a thing.
Nudist colony.
I mean, you think about-
Or a nude beach.
What'd your mother tell you, right?
Always wear clean underwear because you never know when you're going to get hit by a bus.
Right?
Shave your butt crack, don't go out without shaving your butt crack.
That's the new sale.
Anyway.
Sorry, that's not the new sales pitch.
So basically, high quality razors straight to your door.
Although Dr. Carver's Shave Butter would probably help with that.
For a few bucks a month.
And one white charlie.
They've got lots of great bathroom supplies.
Razors, Dr. Carver's Shave Butter that goes on clear so you can see what you're doing.
You might need a mirror for certain things to see what you're doing, but that's besides
the point, or under the point, or-
Anyway.
Where was I going with this?
Right.
One wipe Charlies to clean the affected area before you get-
No, actually, the one wipe Charlies are supposed to be separate from the shaving products.
They're just butt wipes.
The point is, for a few dollars a month, visit dollarshaveclub.com slash Linus and join the
club today.
Also, I must mention that the one wipe Charlies are labeled as butt wipes for men, but all
of these products have apparently been used by female members of our audience, or girlfriends,
or friends of male members of our audience.
Yep.
I have to give that to you.
So they could be like one wipe Charlies.
Charlies.
Yeah.
That's another one.
One wipe Charlies.
No, no.
I didn't mean French.
I meant like Charlies, the feminine-
I know.
I know.
Okay.
Well, freshbooks.com.
Freshbooks.com is an easy cloud-based solution to keeping track of the accounting and little
details like the hours that you've worked for your small business.
It's particularly great if you're self-employed, like let's say you're a plumber or a small-time
PC repairs technician.
So Freshbooks allows you to go ahead, log all your hours, create your invoice, send
your invoice to your customer-
And you can tell if it's been read.
See if they looked at it and go, yeah, I actually do know that you got that.
And that's actually super important and really helpful.
You could go ahead and pay that any time now because it's super convenient because you
could pay by credit card through Freshbooks basically just helps you keep track of all
those little details in one place with you on the go so you don't have to get home at
the end of the day and be fussing about with your complicated accounting software.
And if you're not sure if Freshbooks is right for you, head to freshbooks.com slash when
and get a free trial today.
And don't forget to tell them that we sent you.
And our last spot here is for the Logitech G633.
Luke is going to put on the headset.
I've actually had a lot of people asking me for a review of this headset along with the
933.
So I was waiting for the 930- Wow.
So I was-
I can hear you less now.
I was waiting for the 933 to arrive so that I could do them both at the same time because
I really don't think I need two separate videos of these products.
But the long and short of it is they've got 7.1 Dolby surround sound with the Logitech
gaming software.
They feature 40mm ProG audio drivers and that's really not the important thing about them.
It's really funny how like headphone marketing comes down to all these like points that actually
mean nothing because it's all about the tuning of the drivers as opposed to the actual size
of them.
So the ProG almost matters more.
That's the key.
Whereas gamers are so used to being marketed to with like driver size that you kind of
have to get in line or you're going to have a hard time selling your headset.
Really I don't think Logitech should worry about that stuff.
But Linus, megapixels.
Yeah megapixels, I know right?
Megapixels and megahertz.
And color contrast.
So they're compatible with the PC as well as Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
They've got adjustable RGB lighting and custom tags and they feature a cardioid boom mic.
The very best sort of boom mic because an omnidirectional boom mic would be super duper
dumb.
Have you seen how the boom mic is super ninja?
Yeah actually.
Yeah they showed it to me at PAX.
Do you want to show them though?
It might be.
It's available now on Amazon and you can pick them up at the link in the video description
which I will also be posting in the Twitch chat which is now there.
So go like over me so they can see it because my shirt's black.
So I put it over my throat so they can see it.
Yeah so the point of the mic positioning is just because it's actually really funny to
me how many microphones you literally cannot position optimally.
Because most people think the best place for the mic is right in front of the mouth.
That's terrible.
Because you get that pop pop pop pop pop, the plosives.
You actually want it at the corner of your mouth so having the length be adjustable is
as important as having the height be adjustable for a microphone.
Plosives.
Plosives.
I love it when words kind of like are the thing that they're describing.
Like cacophony.
I noticed that, you know how I'm deaf in this ear or whatever, I still hear bone conductivity
stuff.
It's when I was nodding, my teeth rattled and it was like super loud so I just kind
of kept doing it.
In the shower this morning, the water falling on my head sounded so cool.
We need to have a segment of the show called Cool Story Luke.
Alright so Tesla's autopilot got a speeding warning.
To be clear it was a warning, not a ticket.
But it was basically doing what, 75 miles an hour in a 60 zone?
And like okay, there's some things, if I could get to the topic, there's some things that
people have to realize I'm not at the topic yet.
But it's like you're still supposed to kind of drive the car.
We talked about that last week, like you're supposed to still keep your hands on the wheel,
it's supposed to kind of try to figure out zones but it's not going to stop you from
going too fast.
So yeah it can know the speed limit without necessarily enforcing it on you.
Yeah and it, yeah I don't know.
And also this was, the video in question shows it being used on city roads where the beta
is actually only currently intended for highway use where 15 miles an hour over is still significant
but not as big of a deal as it would be within the city.
Like you're a lot more likely to get a ticket within city limits than you are on the freeway.
Like it doesn't enforce a speed limit at all.
It's able to detect the speed limit or it should be able to detect the speed limit but
it doesn't enforce it in any way.
So some folks are saying the driver is at fault and the autopilot did what it was intended
to do.
As soon as it detected a possible collision it issued a collision warning and disengaged
and the driver was prompted to take control of the vehicle and this is why Musk went straight
up said okay this is beta, keep your hands on the wheel, this is beta.
And people disregarded that immediately.
There's so many videos on YouTube of like oh look it's driving itself and I'm like don't
do that.
Not the point.
You're gonna ruin self-driving cars for all of us.
Yes, please don't screw up right now.
Yeah thank you.
We need you to just participate in the beta, be a good beta tester, and just go on with
your life or don't also would be fine.
Speaking of going on with your life, how could you go on with your life if you didn't have
one of these amazing LTT ugly Christmas sweater design when show shirts?
I haven't actually seen these.
What?
The green one is awesome.
Yep.
There's a red one.
The green one is ballin' and we've got like, I didn't know there were so many different
colours.
We've got like grey and stuff.
I legitimately have not seen these before.
Yep.
I'm definitely getting the green one.
There's still a couch.
Yeah I know.
Well all Ed did was like kind of modernize the existing brofist design.
So both of our shirt graphics are replaced by Christmas trees.
There's a Christmas tree in the background.
And there's like...
Wait.
So are we gonna get the shirts that are on the shirt or are we gonna get the shirts?
We're gonna get these that we're looking at right now.
Okay.
Yeah.
So these are over at teespring.com slash wan Christmas.
No I like the green.
I think the green is the ugliest one.
Green's pretty fantastic for a holiday sweater.
So I'm pretty stoked.
My holiday sweater last year was green and yours was red.
So this year we can go new green and new red.
I saw mine in my drawer today because I was pulling out my Keep On Digging hoodie.
Which was awesome because Ubisoft did something stupid if I recall correctly.
And I was talking about it on Netlink today.
So I was wearing my Keep On Digging shirt and I was like yeah baby!
But yeah I am super excited about this design.
It's gonna be awesome.
I don't think there even was a minimum goal for how many of these we were expecting to
sell.
Like I think this is very much just to like.
We kind of wanted some.
Hey if you're into this then cool we're getting some.
I want one.
I want maybe more than one.
Yeah I'm definitely getting one because I think it's awesome.
Nick told me that there's some kind of complicated roll out of these.
Like we're doing a campaign on Teespring and then it's like a short one and then we're
doing another one or something anyway I don't know.
For now teespring.com slash wan Christmas.
Alright what else we got going on here?
This is.
I love this kind of news where it's just like yeah Microsoft news dot com.
Microsoft confirms the Surface Book is two times more powerful than a MacBook Pro.
Okay then.
So it's okay Nick I don't care.
So basically they said something along the lines of that during the original unveiling
of the Surface Book and then many articles out there were kind of going well hold on
a second.
What the crap are you guys actually talking about?
So Microsoft claimed.
This was the claim.
It is ounce for ounce pound for pound the fastest 13 inch laptop ever made anywhere
on the planet.
So when asked for clarification they gave the following statement.
Our validated performance claims are for the Microsoft Surface Book with an Intel Core
i7 and 16 gigs of RAM and custom discrete Nvidia Geforce GPU against the MacBook Pro
13 inch with retina display with an Intel Core i7 with 16 gigs of RAM.
We used third party benchmarks to test the best available Surface Book against the best
available MacBook Pro.
But what they're not saying is what benchmarks?
Because you could run a game on it and be like yeah it's twice as fast so it's really
good which would have zero applicability to me as a Surface Book buyer.
Like what I'm going to game on this thing for real?
Just because you guys call something Xbox doesn't make it gaming like that console that
they released.
Aw dang.
That's a little rough.
It's best for watching TV mainly sports.
I don't know like you said at the very beginning it's from MicrosoftNews.com so I don't really
care at all.
I'll wait until someone else validates this.
Like us are we getting one?
Yeah I bought one.
And Microsoft News is even this is not Microsoft's own site it's just Microsoft-Bees.com.
But they're even saying like this is stupid.
You have told us nothing.
And because we already know like you can't you don't just get to defy the laws of physics.
Our Core i7 based on a slightly newer design and a slightly higher clock speed and actually
very similar performance per clock is twice as fast.
No the MacBook Pro doesn't throttle if it does it doesn't much.
What one throttled?
The 2015 MacBook performs about half as well as it could in multi-threaded workloads.
And that's another thing is because we don't know what benchmarks we know nothing about
the workloads and it's basically meaningless.
Speaking of things that are basically meaningless this is great Fallout 4 the disc will not
actually contain the entire game.
I hope that's so stupid.
It's apparently in some effort to stop piracy but as everyone ever should know that will
mean absolutely nothing.
So yeah hopefully it comes with the vast majority of the game because a lot of people that I
know these days including me at this point are still interested in physical games because
of download cap.
It's a lot to download some modern games like there's quite a few modern games are like
50 gigs.
If you have to update Star Citizen like oh god it's a lot of data and every single time
I do that like 50 gigs is 10% of my download cap.
For the month.
For the month.
So like if I download a game or two like oh dang there goes 20% of my download cap.
Holy crap.
So buying physical games is still a thing for quite a few people and if you leave a
huge chunk of your game off that can be a problem so hopefully it's just like a couple
key files that are small.
Yeah that's kind of what I'm hoping so the PC will require activation on Steam the console
does not.
Yeah I mean I get using Steam as DRM I especially get if the key that they provide is also a
Steam key so that I at least have the option to download it because I mean not that I'm
condoning this but that at least gives gamers the option to download it at work or something
and take it home on a thumb drive which I'm sure you've probably done already.
I've done that tons of times.
We don't have a bandwidth cap here I've abused that to no end.
Me too.
I've come to work with flash drives so many times.
Yep.
Oh.
That's like why Steam is installed on my work computer.
Yeah I mean on Steam it particularly helps but on some of the other ones where it's much
more difficult to download the game files and then just drag and drop I really don't
understand.
If anyone from EA or Ubisoft is watching right now drag and drop install is like half the
point of Steam for me.
Being able to put all my game files on a NAS and then just drag and drop a game over to
my SSD that I want to play at that moment versus downloading the stupid thing again
has a huge value like and you would get rid of a lot of this whole data cap issue because
you know you got your group of gamer friends or whatever you take turns being the sacrificial
lamb to download the game and then just share it on a USB driver like there's still a place
for physical data sharing.
Every time I go to a LAN party you make sure someone shows up with the USB hard drive that
has everything on it so and you just pass it around.
I don't have a problem with online validation of the license.
That's fine but make it make it simple make the files easy and make the files easy.
So here's a rumor and the original original post here seems to be from Nintendo forums
so I'm really not sure how this qualifies as news but it's in our doc for some reason
so we might as well talk about it.
If for no reason other than to talk about how console rumors should all be completely
ignored because most of them come from console fans and no offense but it seems like a lot
of the really rabid console fans have no idea what the hell they're talking about when it
comes to hardware.
The Xbox one can play 4k remember that it's like remember how big of a thing that was
yeah it's like actually 720p on like everything and you know what the stupid thing is you
can't even talk to these people because you're like okay let's let's take a step back for
a minute here okay it has an HDMI 1.4 port okay so let's let's take a step back from
that and let's look at it an HDMI 1.4 port no no no the Xbox one is not magic no it is
not magic okay so let's take a step back again not magic it's not magic okay HDMI 1.4 that
means 3840 by 2160 30 fps max okay so you're either playing at 30 fps which is not cinematic
no no no no it's not cinematic or you're playing at 1080p and then they didn't even get that
or you're actually going to end up playing at 720p they got cinematic 960p oh that's
rough anyway so the rumor here at any rate is that and part of this makes a little bit
of sense because relative to what console gamers are used to an updated Nintendo console
might look like something super powerful right now because Nintendo has gone ahead with that
rumored strategy it looks like of more frequent release cycles I mean the other console guys
are also rumored to be working on replacements much sooner than the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation
3 got replaced but now we're seeing rumors that Nintendo is actually pushing forward
with the Nintendo NX and we could be seeing it relatively soon so a faster refresh cycle
midway through a longer cycle from your competitors could put you hardware wise in a much more
competitive place without spending more this is something that we've talked about a lot
regarding future proofing the concept of future proofing on the PC we're actually compared
to buying a single $5,000 computer you are much better off buying a modest $1,500 computer
today waiting well relatively modest versus going completely like over the top and quite
a sly this and that buying just sort of a bang-for-the-buck computer now waiting two years while you're
having a great gaming experience with that buying another one then you have like an extra
computer waiting another couple years buying another one that strategy you spent $500 less
and I guarantee you by the end of that period of time by the time games are coming out that
are actually leveraging the better hardware that last computer you have is way better
than the one that you would have bought for five grand in the first place this is something
we've talked about time and time again you only buy a super expensive computer if you
just don't care if you're just like whatever don't care then that's fine that's cool go
for it but even better reasons for stuff like water cooling because a lot of times you can
step those up yes easily things like well monitors not so much anymore I used to say
that but monitor technology is moving so fast right now yeah speakers okay speakers a great
pair of headphones actually I think I think peripherals are changing slowly enough now
that you buy a great game like a little crazy burst there was a very kind of stuff and then
now it's kind of okay you either want cherry or kaiwa switches and kind of or razor switch
so I would say yeah you buy peripherals things you interact with every day I do believe in
spending a fair bit of money on but the actual like the CPU or the S storage is a great one
never over by storage just get what you need and expand it as you go anyway so the rumor
is they will have incredibly powerful hardware in the Nintendo NX and it was said that one
software demo included with the kit crunches so many polygons that it's currently impossible
to run at 60 FPS using a current generation Intel CPU and near top of the line graphics
card which means nothing nothing can't emphasize that enough means nothing so the point of
this rumor topic is that we should ignore rumors and the next rumor yeah and the next
rumor the snapdragon 820 rumored to be 50% more powerful than the samsung xno 7420 which
actually makes a whole ton of sense because finally for the first time in a while we've
got a manufacturing process shrink that will account for that 50% performance improvement
pretty much right there and back to you tom and our next rumor nope not a rumor no no
more Microsoft is apparently is there more rumors okay let's see I hope we have more
rumors it's rumored that China is still hacking the u.s. okay it's not really rumored that's
more accused they're denying it of course of course they are wow we've actually Samsung
Galaxy s7 specs leaked oh okay okay okay okay got another rumor boys yeah we got another
rumor this one's from WCCF WCCF tech so they just got a picture I love I love it when the
rumor articles just have a picture of the current product because it's like yes this
rumor is so unsubstantiated that we couldn't even find a render that that a user created
we actually just need to use the current phone so the s7 is apparently getting this is great
I love it when a phone rumor it's rumored it will feature better performance better
multimedia capabilities and an improved camera not a battery Nvidia's new flagship graphics
card rumored to include better display interfaces faster processing and more RAM maybe even
CUDA cores more CUDA cores you have got to be kidding me so basically that that's the
rumor though 20 megapixel camera Exynos 8890 or Snapdragon 820 it's not clear if they're
going to do one or the other or a split strategy they have done that before different processors
in different markets let's go back to something that's that's not rumors yeah well I wanted
to talk about this what I've had their WCCF tech article actually but one of the recent
track builds of Windows 10 has introduced a new prompt when you try to switch your default
browser from edge it was already super annoying where it actually is like can you confirm
versus just immediately applying it once I click chrome so it already did that but apparently
it's something along the lines of give Microsoft edge a shot just like come on you guys edge
is a piece of trash it's almost as bad as being I'm sorry almost as bad as being and
you know it's why did they change how you change program defaults why do I have to go
into some stupid menu now yeah they're trying to make it harder so let's bring up let's
go to let's go to Bing calm let's try and search for something so this this was something
I was looking for the other day dude perfect social blade okay user dude perfect oh that
must not be the real dude perfect hold on a second okay oh must be dude perfect TV yeah
okay so it like super gave you except that's not it what nope not it either they only got
a hundred and fifty thousand subscribers I think it's a secondary channel or something
okay maybe those another way that's oh oh hold on a second here it is it's Cory cotton
because he's been grandfathered in under the old rules he had a bad name that that wasn't
changed oh okay so I was searching for this like how did this not find this so every time
I use Bing like I swear every time I use Bing and it didn't even manage to bring me the
social blade page every time I use Bing it's like why do I hate this this is why first
hit Cory cotton social blade this is the real dude perfect channel with all six million
of its subscribers and all that crap it's like Bing you're even ripping off Google search
results you still can't get them right you still are not even close why don't I use Bing
that's why because every single time I use it like probably half the time I use a web
browser I'm trying to troubleshoot something and I swear you can put in quotes an exact
error message in Bing it manages to find something else kind of garbage that I don't do with
edge though yeah sorry back to back to edge so basically they're just like give edge a
shot have you given edge a shot yeah I have I don't like it when you first when you first
launch it it hides your stupid it puts your stupid address bar in it yes that is very
I'm just like why do I have to click here to move the address bar here who thought that
was an intuitive design no one I hope yeah anyway sorry where I was going with this is
Google's been slinging some crap at Microsoft for sort of their behavior with edge and making
it more difficult for people to switch to Chrome but I actually noticed something absolutely
hilarious on the iPhone the other day and I wish I could screen share this with you
or something but I'm really not set up for that so that but I you'll just have to take
my word for it so in Google Docs when you when you click on a link that you want to
open can you go over open link this is great the menu is from from top to bottom download
Chrome open in Safari or cancel and you cannot say don't ask me again so for Google to be
slinging crap about this kind of stuff like yeah can you not please because it's not like
you're not guilty of this too like that's some pretty brutal stuff like I actually trying
to read trying to read the articles from the land show doc earlier today the number of
times I almost accidentally downloaded chrome was pretty frustrating and I use Safari on
the iPhone now because force touch is freaking awesome for web browsing or 3D touch or whatever
they call it I don't care but the pressure sensitive touch screen right do we have anything
else yeah there's a couple more cool things this is really neat the Apple patent for an
active screen shattered screen protector so these drawings are really cool so basically
in much the same way that hard drives are capable of using accelerometers to detect
that they're in freefall and brace for an impact park the heads Apple has patented a
system that would allow corner little like rubber or some kind of protectors to pop up
when the phone detects it's in freefall and keep the screen from impacting the ground
directly very cool technology would love to see this fully protected but it will help
it will help it's a whole lot better than nothing that's true which is what we have
because like if you have a rock still fall well if you have the phone fall with the screen
with the rock hitting the middle it won't matter but if you drop it on a tile floor
you know or a concrete floor or wooden floor like there's a lot of places you can drop
it where it would help yeah so here's the proposed mechanism that would have the protector
kind of roll up inside the phone interesting so basically I guess they still don't intend
to give me better battery life but at least my screen won't shatter this is very beneficial
for Apple along with the way that they stealthily mostly waterproof the success because the
reseller and trade-in market for the iPhone is huge business for them so preventing shattered
screens and water damage is actually in Apple's best interest for the sake of that whole ecosystem
protecting the resale value of these products yeah very cool very cool stuff talk about
our blog post where you talk about China yep yep sprint find who cares another ISP find
for doing another stupid thing oh this is great Facebook is draining your battery because
it's tracking your location so this is actually something oh Facebook has identified two issues
behind the battery drain the company announced and said it has solved the problem with an
update so I I would like to see if I log into Facebook now on my droid turbo if it still
drains my battery right yeah but there you go apparently this is resolved I I guess we
didn't pull it off the dock oh EA COO Peter Moore criticizes HD remasters and backwards
compatibility so kind of went and took the high road on the one thing and then went and
was kind of a butthole from the other thing because like I can think of a lot of reasons
why backwards compatibility is super important reason number one my wheeze optical drive
is dead so if my Wii U which I don't have one but if I ever were to get a Wii U and
I wanted to play Wii games on it if if I were to get a Wii U it would be super cool that
it could play Wii games because hardware that is end of life and it's not being manufactured
anymore can can die and that's the thing so backwards compatibility is actually super
cool as for criticizing HD remasters I have very mixed feelings about this this is something
I wanted to discuss I don't mind HD remasters at all I'm okay with them too I would actually
super love for there to be a remaster of Final Fantasy 6 for example I'd love for there to
be a remaster of Morrowind yeah I don't mind remasters at all not even slightly some it's
a little bit frustrating when it seems like all a company does is remaster old games yep
but I'd rather they remaster their old good games than make new crappy ones yes I also
agree but maybe we're just getting old there's a sad thought I kind of doubt it to be completely
honest yeah who cares all right fair enough remasters of old movies don't really work
the same way but I'm sorry I think you changed gears on me a little bit there was I talking
about movies no oh okay remember us being old but it's not just because we're old oh
because I don't just like I still like the nostalgic value of old movies so do movie
reboots work for you or no it depends I would I would say there's been some pretty good
ones like what though let's have a look okay Google can answer this for let's let's give
Bing a shot oh god top movie reboots it's probably been good like a top 10 movie remakes
okay okay so they managed about.com okay let's let Google try top 10 movie remakes all right
oh look at that we get how I don't I don't know if some of these are really that applicable
remakes movies frequently mentioned on the web yeah this isn't Google let us down because
I'm pretty sure a lot of these weren't remade you make true lies pretty sure that's not
a thing like hmm yeah that's very interesting okay so anyway okay well let's find out which
one of the top linked articles is better so about that so the magnificent seven haven't
seen it casino royale okay there there's there's a there's a wait hold on a second what that's
not a remake oh okay what some may not consider this a remake but George Lucas acknowledges
a debt to the hidden fortress as a source of inspiration what okay all right all right
so let's have a look at this one 310 to Yuma top 10 best remakes the fly okay I haven't
seen either of those they're both from before I was born well okay so maybe they're not
really a thing because reboots I'm definitely okay with I mean looking at I loved the way
Star Trek got rebooted some people might hate certain reboots I think are okay like like
I joked on Twitter about how like the only movie that matters is hackers and it should
just be remastered rebooted and Hollywood should just quit it was an obvious joke some
people thought I was serious which was weird but like I don't want them to remake hackers
right that would be the worst hackers doesn't make sense in 2015 yeah it makes sense when
it was filmed right and it was great back then and like I don't know you know what else
would be better in a year that wasn't 2015 fake reviewers this is great I am so glad
to see Amazon going after people for this I'm always glad when I see good Amazon things
in the news because like we pimp Amazon at the end of like all of our videos we're like
yeah buy from Amazon with our affiliate code it's cool so this is a great thing that they
are definitely doing for the industry so they're actually going after fraudulent reviewers
that are using multiple accounts and ordering empty parcels to avoid detection and who are
working with manufacturers to post fake five star reviews on the website so the defendants
named as John Doe's and referred to only by their usernames offered to write fraudulent
reviews for as little as five dollars and this is an Amazon statement takes the credibility
of its customer reviews very seriously an unhealthy ecosystem has developed outside
of Amazon to supply reviews in exchange for payment and I mean things like verified owner
do help a lot I generally speaking ignore anything that's not a verified purchase on
Amazon yeah but that doesn't change that the like the overall star rating is affected by
all of them one thing Amazon could do actually this is kind of a smart idea sometimes I have
those if anyone from Amazon is watching maybe give us a way to filter the verified purchases
from the non-verified purchases in the star rating that would be super cool um yeah so
I don't know I guess that's all there is to really say about it other than that that practice
sucks and we hate it everyone chat's freaking out about Fallout 4 but the Fallout 4 is not
for like three weeks or something two and a half weeks so yeah you got a collector's
edition right yes very narrowly yeah there was there was wave one which like I was at
work or somewhere I was doing something so I didn't have a chance to get it and then
there was wave two which I didn't hear about until it was over because they like stores
randomly got more stock like all over the place but there wasn't that much stock and
I didn't hear about it so I didn't get the collector edition thing and then a while later
I was trying to see like oh I wonder how much they are on like eBay or something if it's
like slightly more than sure but I knew it would be ridiculous right and it was like
seven hundred dollars and I was like okay nope not doing that obviously so on Twitter
I'm like does anyone know of anywhere where it's not ridiculous and some dudes like oh
I have a huge backlog and I'm just gonna cancel my pre-order so you can just take it I was
like wow that's pretty nice you messaged me on the forum and we worked out everything
and it's gonna be fine this is so funny I can't believe we didn't mention this YouTube
calling sorry back to YouTube red them calling it YouTube red like really did no one at YouTube
figure out the similarity to another online video site that's also right yeah and also
has to yeah name yeah I just can't even I can't even yeah I just can't even like yeah
this week when show brought yeah you know I hear why don't we let's end it let's end
the show and let's let's kick into after-party mode for a couple minutes here because I got
a couple sort of not safe for when show topics so let's go ahead and roll the outro
my ear like hurts you're right gotten all the walrus like during the show
you
